Almost seven years and 88,000 reviews later, online survival game SCUM has said goodbye to Early Access and entered full release on Steam.
Since 2018, developers at Gamepires have worked tirelessly to perfect the title through 258 updates, tweaks, and gameplay improvements, all while keeping its dedicated player base informed on its progress.
It's been one hell of a journey, but SCUM has finally got its long-awaited v1.0 release, and we have everything you need to know about the game below!
What Is SCUM?
Built with Unreal Engine 4, SCUM is a brutal PvPvE open world game featuring realistic and complex survival mechanics.
As a prisoner under the watchful eye of the sinister TEC1 corporation, players freefall onto a super-max security island, known as SCUM island, for an intense televised event where survival is anything but guaranteed.
From navigating the island's relentless environments like open fields, dense forests, and other rugged terrains, players will need every bit of skill, courage, and wit to survive as they loot, craft, and evade the ever-present dangers.
In SCUM, every detail matters. Beyond physical threats, survival hinges on maintaining a proper diet and keeping wounds clean. Players will also need to decide whether to eliminate other players or team up as they loot and craft for better gear and weaponry.
When Is SCUM v1.0 Coming Out?
SCUM officially left Early Access and launched exclusively for PC via Steam on June 17, 2025.
Early Access to SCUM had previously been available via the Steam Store since August 29, 2018, gaining over 88,000 reviews in the process, most of which were positive.
Sharing the news of its full launch date during Summer Game Fest, Sven Folkesson, General Manager at Gamepires, said:
"The entire team has been working tirelessly to create an open-world simulation experience like no other, and a title that we hope will set the bar for the next generation of survival games. This is not a game for the faint-hearted, and we can't wait to see players put their skills to the test and fight for their survival when SCUM leaves Early Access."
What's New in SCUM v1.0?
SCUM launches into v1.0 with a new update that introduces major graphical improvements and significant gameplay features.
Players can expect a complete map rework in the v1.0 update, including a major graphical overhaul. This significantly boosts the game's visual quality and performance, leading to more immersive environments and a fully optimized gameplay experience.
Version 1.0 also introduces armed NPCs, presenting survivors with both new threats and potential rewards. These NPCs will engage hostiles from range, subsequently providing opportunities for players to scavenge additional loot.
Last but not least, new and returning vehicles give players additional methods to traverse the island and escape conflict, while major improvements to anti-cheat aim to provide a fair and improved game experience for all.
