  • Quick Answer: Riot Games is shutting down their fighting game 2XKO due to low player engagement, with development ending in December.

RIP 2XKO has, sadly, become a reality. Riot Games just announced that active development will end in December, with the final content patch launching in October. That means 2XKO’s entire life cycle as a live-service game lasted a mere 10 months after a decade in development.

Via a statement shared on social media, Riot Games explained that despite cultivating a strong, passionate player base, there simply weren’t enough total players spending their time and money in 2XKO to justify continuous support beyond 2026.

There’s no denying it brought a ton of interesting mechanics to the table, like being able to play in Duos or controlling a single character via the Fuse system—eliminating the daunting barrier for newcomers of having to learn two separate characters. Sadly, it just wasn’t enough.

“On the business side, we hoped that by making the game free, we could make the genre more accessible and discoverable to new players, and that they could fall in love with fighting games in the same way we did. Ideally this would have happened over time, starting by earning the trust of lots of core fighting game players, and growing into a larger player base when more features and content came online. We also went into this project knowing from the start that free-to-play comes with a minimum player requirement to support these ambitions.”

In short, the statement says: “2XKO costs us substantially more to operate than it brings in, and engagement has stayed relatively flat despite our larger updates.”

The 2XKO team pushed Champions to release before they were originally slated to come out, which is why we got two—Senna and Thresh—back in June. Sadly, it seems they didn’t move the needle, nor did the multiple skin bundles available for some of the most popular Champions like Ahri, Akali, or Vi.

As noted, the latest content update will drop this October with the release of Samira. The final patch is scheduled for December and will be limited strictly to bug fixes as required.

The final roadmap for 2XKO looks like this:

  • September 8: Lux Champion releases. A brand-new $39.99 bundle will launch including all skins, skin chromas, and taunts for every champion. Ranked will be removed, and all Champions will be unlocked for all players.
  • October: Samira Champion releases. The Ultimate Bundle skin will be updated with additional skins for free.
  • December: Optional patch for bug fixes if required.

Furthermore, if you purchased any content on or before August 20, you are entitled to a full refund (and your cosmetics won’t be removed).

It's sad to see it go this way, but the servers will still remain online for the foreseeable future, at the very least. So if you were truly in love with 2XKO, it’s not going anywhere just yet.
