There’s plenty of Resident Evil news today, following a series of posts from known Capcom insider @AestheticGamer1, aka Dusk Golem. He said everything we knew about Resident Evil 9 was scrapped. The good news? A reveal is still expected sometime this year, potentially during Summer Game Fest or another major event, which sets the stage for its rumored 2026 release window.

Is Resident Evil 9 Open World?

The Capcom insider Dusk Golem clarified that Resident Evil 9 is not an open-world game. Initially, it was planned as a large-scale open-world survival horror title set on an island near Singapore, with Jill Valentine and Leon Kennedy as the leads. However, that vision was heavily reworked when the game underwent a major reboot in 2021.

How long was Resident Evil 9 in Development?

Development on Resident Evil 9 originally began in 2017. After the reboot, it remains unclear what direction Capcom has taken for the next installment in its best-selling horror franchise. Dusk Golem did say that Leon is still expected to return as the main playable character, but Jill, once intended to be a major part of the game, may have been cut.

That’s not all. Dusk Golem also addressed the rumored Resident Evil Zero remake featuring Billy Coen and Rebecca Chambers. He stated that the information is outdated and that he’s unsure if Capcom still plans to pursue it. Despite long-standing fan hopes, he also confirmed that there has never been a remake in development for the original Resident Evil.

When is Resident Evil 9 Coming Out?

Resident Evil 9 is rumored to release in 2026. Its reveal trailer might be announced this year, potentially during Summer Games FestDusk Golem has gone quiet regarding this major Resident Evil 9 leak, leaving the next move to Capcom. With the game reportedly facing a second delay (one attributed to the pandemic), he believes the company won’t risk postponing it a third time. A reveal could be just around the corner.
