Resident Evil Requiem looks like it's going to be another breakout success for Capcom. This horror game looks promising, with the first and third-person switching to please two huge gaming audiences. Originally, many thought this was going to be an open-world horror title. Now, Capcom confirmed that they indeed did experiment with this popular gaming genre.

Capcom posted a video on their website (via the Gaming Leaks subreddit) where the developers confirmed that there were plans to make RE9 an open-world game. This would have also been an online shooter, which isn’t very Resident Evil-like. Capcom then scrapped these plans, feeling that players wouldn’t like the online multiplayer aspect.

Because the previous Resident Evil releases were huge single-player successes, it seems that Capcom made the right decision by not making Resident Evil Requiem an online multiplayer title. The company has tried numerous times to make RE multiplayer games and failed each time, so fans are more than happy a mainline entry won’t be meeting that fate.

We still don’t know a lot about the gameplay of RE9, aside from the fact that horror will play a huge part. During the most recent Capcom Spotlight, they acknowledged the rumors that Leon would be a lead in the game, claiming that he wouldn’t really sell the fear of this horror game. However, with teasers of a heavily-armed character joining our more vulnerable lead, it looks like there’s plenty of room for Leon.

Although Capcom won’t be making Resident Evil Requiem a multiplayer title, fans do hope to see some of the open-world aspects kept in this release. Doing side quests for survivors while trying to survive against numerous enemies would be a fulfilling gameplay loop. Even though there are fans tired of the open-world genre, we have a feeling that Capcom can do something with the genre one day.
