AMD and PlayStation recently teamed up for Project Amethyst, which is supposed to innovate “machine learning technology.” This partnership is what led to the improved PS5 Pro, and many fans feel that they will collaborate again for the PlayStation 6. Adding fuel to that fire is an AMD executive who recently said both companies will soon push the boundaries of game graphics.

It appears that fans may receive games that don’t appear to be compatible with a PS4. I'm mostly kidding, but it feels like graphics can’t really get any better than what we have now.

Jack Huynh, the AMD Computing & Graphics SVP, spoke about meeting with Lead PlayStation Architect Mark Cerny and their shared vision for Project Amethyst. On his X post, Huynh talked up designing a new architecture for machine learning and developing neural networks that will “push the boundaries of real-time graphics” in games.

While Sony has teased the PS6 previously, this post from Huynh seemingly confirms that they are actively working on the next-generation console. Granted, the machine is never named, and Sony probably wants to show it off in a future Sony State of Play. Whatever the case, it’s clear that these two are going to work together on a new console.

Although the teasers of a new console are interesting, to say the least, this focus on graphics might not solve any problems the current industry is facing. If anything, having more detailed visuals will lead to longer and more expensive development time. Sony and Microsoft have already disappointed fans this generation, so it’s hard to feel excited for the next if we’re just getting more graphics.

Plus, there are very few games in the current generation that look better than anything on the PS4 and Xbox One. Sure, if you compare, say, Spider-Man and its sequel side-by-side, the differences are noticeable. But they still don’t look that different from each other, which is a major problem, especially since waiting for sequels and new games takes so much time now.

Don’t get me wrong, improved visuals are an expected part of new consoles, and we’re sure the PS6 will drop jaws when they showcase a new port of GTA 6. However, this generation proves that improved visuals are not enough to satisfy gamers.

We hope that Sony has a plan to make the PS6 more interesting, because they’ve disappointed plenty of gamers this generation. Even if those same disappointed fans keep buying their console.
