With the Switch 2 being a huge success and Xbox focusing on making games for all systems, fans are curious about Sony's next move. This doesn’t even include niche handheld PCs like Valve’s Steam Deck, which has also been a success for the company. Because of this, many were expecting a new PlayStation handheld from Sony.
However, it looks like Sony is more committed to consoles now than ever. Rather than making a PS5 portable, the company is teasing the PlayStation 6 and focusing more on cloud gaming. Considering that the PS5 and PS Portal are also top sellers, this makes plenty of sense.
During a meeting about the future of PlayStation (via VGC), new CEO Hideaki Nishino discussed how important cloud gaming has been lately. Nishino pointed out that this process lets fans play games they usually couldn’t, showing how valuable the internet has been. That is probably why the PlayStation Portal has been a better device lately.
Although there is a huge focus on cloud gaming, Nishino points out that console gaming is still their next focus. More importantly, Nishino teased that something big was coming, telling fans that a PlayStation 6 will be happening.
“We now have a large ecosystem of highly engaged players across both the PlayStation 5 and the PlayStation 4 generations. So naturally, therefore, there’s a huge interest in our next generation console strategy. While we cannot share further details at this stage, the future of the platform is top of mind. We are committed to exploring a new and enhanced way for players to engage with our content and services.”
If Sony is preparing for the PS6, this will make the PS5 one of the most disappointing console generations from the company. Although the console is a powerhouse, most of its gaming library consists of sequels. Occasionally, a new IP like Returnal is legitimately good, but every other game hasn’t felt like a “must-have.”
Then again, if you compare this to Xbox's recent output, Sony is still the clear winner between the two. While Xbox had a decent showcase recently, the lack of news on previously announced games like the Fable reboot has been disappointing. Not helping is how the company is also seemingly moving away from physical titles.
At least the Xbox Ally looks cool.
