PS5 Owners Won't Get Refunds Despite Sony's Massive Tariff Refunds
It was recently revealed that Sony garnered around $508 million in refunds from the US federal government after it was ruled that the previously implemented tariffs were illegal. For reference, Sony raised the prices of the PS5 in response to US tariffs last year.
Despite the fact that they increased prices in response to tariffs, Sony has no plans to refund people who purchased the consoles at those prices.
During Sony's Q&A with press and investors during their earnings call, CFO Lin Tao stated that most of the refunds will be going to PlayStation. Additionally, an unnamed Sony executive confirmed that 70% of the tariff refund was collected between April and June 2026. Sony is still expected to receive $152 million.

In a fair and just world, Sony would take the high route and refund consumers who purchased a PS5 after the price increase. It would be a move that would make people believe Sony when they say they put the players first and would give them some good press after all the flak they've gotten after they revealed their all-digital era plan.
But no. That's not the plan.
PlayStation players have since filed a class action lawsuit against the company. Sony will likely use some funds to respond to the lawsuit - which still isn't for the player, since it's a response to legal action. That's not a good look, huh?
