- Quick Answer: A proposed "Gym Leader Mode" would allow Pokemon players to build custom gyms, set type-specific puzzles, and defend their title against real-time, level-scaled NPC challengers.
For a very long time, becoming the Pokemon Champion has been the ultimate goal for every trainer, at least in the mainline Pokemon titles. Players travel across a huge region to catch Pokemon and use those battle partners to dominate Gyms, which eventually leads to challenging the Pokemon League.
But one thing that players never officially experienced is to be Gym Leaders themselves, and I believe this one feature, if added, will provide a fresh and dynamic experience to Poke-players. What if, in the middle of the gameplay, you get tasked to be a Gym Leader, setting up puzzles, and maybe even after finishing the game? That's what we are here to discuss.
Gyms and Gym Leaders In Pokemon

It cannot be overstated that Gym Leaders are some of the most important characters in the mainline titles because they are basically the power check and the major progression ladder in every town, testing the player's skills and team composition to prepare them for much bigger trials ahead. This is why most Gym Leaders are respected, because their goal is to inspire.
Gym Leaders not only test the combat prowess of players but also their wits, using their Gym's designated puzzles, mostly related and stylized to their favorite typing. Watson, Generation 3's Electric Type Gym Leader, uses electrical fences, while Candice, Generation 4's Ice Type Gym Leader, uses frozen floors to scratch the challenger's brain before he/she can get to her. Bottom line, being a Gym Leader means being inventive and tactical.
Building Your Own Gym

Now imagine if that kind of responsibility is given to you, either during the main story or the post-game, and you were tasked to create, and more importantly, manage your own Gym? You get to choose your type specialty, set up your own puzzles, and place your Gym Trainers to your liking. That would add another meaningful layer to Pokemon's definition of RPG.
The most sensible way to get this is to inherit a Gym, but getting a new one from scratch, because a town lacks one, makes sense too. This can reach Pokopia levels of creative input, and we all know how fans and newcomers alike love Pokemon Pokopia's freedom when it comes to creativity.
How It Would Work, If Implemented

Let's say you have finished constructing the Gym of your dream. Of course, you still need to continue with your own journey because you have your own goal to be a Pokemon Master. The game can implement an "on-call" mechanic, wherein even if you are in the middle of going through your own adventure, you can receive calls or notifications that a Challenger has arrived at your Gym, and once they finish the puzzle, battling you is next.
This might also mean that quick travel mechanics should be put in place as well, especially in cases where your current location is relatively far from the town where you set up your Gym. Or maybe this feature can be added when you finally get the Fly HM/traversal method in the game. Better yet, this can also be heavily integrated into the story to make it that much more impactful.
Level Scaling Is A Must

Another thing that should be considered for this proposal is level scaling. If the player's Pokemon are all highly leveled, then it might just be a cakewalk. To fix this, challengers of your Gym should scale their levels to your current growth or maybe, with every Gym Badge that you get, you get the ability to increase the level cap of your Gym.
This way, we also see challengers get stronger and use more diverse or well-tuned teams as you also become stronger. I guess the questionable implication of this feature is that you are always going to be the hardest hurdle these NPCs will face, because surely, you, the player, will win every single battle.
It Can Also Work As A Spin-Off

Over the years, Pokemon has produced multiple spin-offs that deviate from the common formula, like Pokken Tournament, Pokemon Conquest, Pokemon Snap, and the recent Pokemon Pokopia. So if the above idea won't work on a mainline title due to its time complexity and implications, maybe this cool gimmick of becoming a Gym Leader can be the main theme of a spin-off title.
If it gets its own title, Pokemon can focus on making the idea more fun because there's only one goal. Build the best Gym in the region and become the most memorable Gym Leader. Imagine a Pokemon story centering on you as an up-and-coming Gym Leader with side missions and distinct challengers. It's unheard of, and that's what makes it so awesome!
Pokemon Is Beyond Being A Champion

Pokemon, at its core, is a role-playing game, but so far, we've mostly role-played as a 10-year-old Trainer tasked with exploring the region, collecting Gym Badges, and dethroning the Champion. And truthfully, that formula has worked for years and works still. But the role-playing experience can be expanded further, and why not work as one of the most important jobs in the Pokemon world? As a Gym Leader.
