  • Quick Answer: Pickmon is an upcoming open-world game by PocketGame where players collect creatures using cards, currently facing "rip-off" accusations due to similarities to Pokemon.

A new open-world game has been announced, and it's looking like a Palworld 2.0 situation.

PocketGame recently unveiled its upcoming card-collecting open-world game, Pickmon. The game allows players to travel through a lost civilization with special creatures called Pickmon. As you explore, you will meet other Pickmon with unique abilities, which will allow you to overcome obstacles in different terrains.

Sound familiar? Yup, it's eerily similar to Pokemon and Palworld, and we all know what actions Nintendo took against PocketPair in 2024. Is this basically a Palworld part two? Let's discuss.

Pickmon: Is It a Pokemon Rip-Off?

It didn't take long for people to notice how similar the Pickmon were to Pokemon, even just the names can be easily confused.

The Pickmon trailer featured a wide range of Pickmon that looked a little too similar to existing Pokemon. They not only had their own version of Pikachu (who is THE face of Pokemon, mind you), but there were also dupes of Piplup, Lapras, Braviary, and more.

One scene also showed a character throwing a card to catch a Pickmon, which is likely a reference to how Trainers throw Poke balls to catch Pokemon.

Is it wrong for a game to be influenced by Pokemon? Of course not. It's a franchise that shaped a generation of gamers and remains relevant to this day. But when the game starts feeling more like a copy rather than an ode, that's when it becomes iffy.

Will Pickmon Be a Palworld Part 2?

Back in September 2024, Nintendo sued PocketPair for patent infringement, claiming the latter had copied Pokemon's monster-capturing and riding mechanics for Palworld. As of writing, the case is still ongoing.

Because of Nintendo's lawsuit, PocketPair was forced to change some of the mechanics of Palworld so that it wasn't too similar to Pokemon. And while Palworld is still a popular game, its reputation definitely took a hit after the lawsuit was made public.

While Nintendo has yet to make a move against Pickmon, it's unlikely they will sit still. The Japanese tech giant is known for protecting their IP fiercely, so it's possible they will sue PocketGames for copyright infringement.

We'll just have to wait and see what pans out. Pickmon doesn't have a planned release date, so they can definitely make some changes before Nintendo acts.
