Final Fantasy 7 is often praised by many as one of the greatest JRPGs ever made, thanks to its lovable cast and amazing story. In recent years, fans have claimed that Persona 5 is in that game’s league, with an equally lovable cast and a more contemporary story.
Simply put, both games are amazing. But which is the better one?
This question is pretty hard to answer for a variety of reasons. Persona 5 and Final Fantasy 7 made their impact in very dcomparisonsifferent times, making certain comparions unfair. However, both games still hold up really well. We can’t deny that pitting these games against each other is morbidly appealing.
We’re going to list reasons why Persona 5 is better and why Final Fantasy 7 is better. In the end, fans can decide which of these two is the superior game.
Persona 5 is Better
Persona 5 looks like the hypothetical winner at first, because this game came out in 2017. This game is filled with modern mechanics that made a lot of JRPGs look dull in comparison, and not just the ones from FF7’s era. With a stylish UI, amazing art style, and addictive gameplay, it’s easy to see why many hold this game in high regard.
Aside from just being an amazing JRPG in its own right, the game also improves on previous Persona games. It has the best Social Link system, as Joker unlocks gameplay mechanics when he bonds with new people. The story is also really relevant, dealing with abuse, sexual assault, police corruption, and so much more.
It’s really the gameplay that carries Persona 5, and potentially makes it better than Final Fantasy 7. Having buttons dictate different commands made the battles feel snappier and more responsive. Hitting enemy weaknesses for the chance of an All-Out Attack is still addictive.
This game’s influence can still be seen in modern RPGs like Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. The game only got better with Persona 5 Royal’s re-releasing, adding even more features and gameplay additions to an already excellent JRPG.
Final Fantasy 7 is Better
While it might not hold up gameplay-wise, Final Fantasy 7 still revolutionized a genre in the ‘90s, and the franchise has been living in this game’s shadow ever since. Even after the release of various games in this series, many compare these adventures to what Cloud went through and still feel that his adventure was the peak.
Using a great mix of environmentalism and capitalism, FF7’s story holds up ridiculously well. It’s why the Remake trilogy keeps the basic story beats, because fans can relate to these themes since it still affects them to this day. Cloud, Tifa, Barrett, and the rest of this crew are also still a top-tier cast, with players replaying the older title just to see unique character interactions.
For fans who don’t like random battles and stiff analog movement of the original game, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is also there to modernize things. Sure, the game being more of an action RPG received mixed reactions, but that trilogy still has fans. Many are still looking forward to the conclusion when the final game eventually comes out.
