Overwatch 2 may not have characters like Iron Man and Captain America and the backing of NetEase games like Marvel Rivals, but they make up for it with some stellar crossovers. They've previously collaborated with animes like One Punch Man and Cowboy Bebop, now, a new one is seemingly in the works: Mobile Suit Gundam Wing.
Though it hasn’t been officially announced yet, it looks like a collaboration is coming between Overwatch 2 and the Gundam franchise to commemorate Wing’s 30th Anniversary. Fans don’t know what’s coming yet, but they have an idea of what they want out of the collab.
Overwatch x Gundam Wing Collab
With Season 16 incoming, Twitter user @SkaVorah leaked some incoming content which includes a new Mythic skin for Juno as well as the collab with Gundam Wing. Here’s the post:
No further details have been revealed about the collab, but the comments are already making their wishlists about what they want from the crossover. One fan wrote, “We are getting a [Gundam] collab!?!? Pinch me I’m dreaming!!!!”. Another fan wrote in the comments, “What's with the Gundam Wing logo? Don't tell me that's the cross-over, I couldn't handle the hype of that.”
The Gundam Wing story is also known for five very character specific mobile suits, and it’s likely that fans would want some skins and cosmetics based off of them:
If not full cosmetics, some would settle for some weapons based on Gundams. For one, the RX-78-2 has a flail weapon that it occasionally uses—which would be perfect for a character like Brigitte. They can even theme her shield like the RX’s:
What is Mobile Suit Gundam Wing?
Mobile Suit Gundam Wing is one of the Gundam franchise’s most popular series that had a run from 1995-1996. The story is set outside of the main ‘Universal Century’ timeline of the original Gundam series and follows an alternate war between Earth and space colonists.
The series mainly focuses on five main Gundam pilots, each with their specific Gundams: Heero Yuy (Wing Gundam), Duo Maxwell (Gundam Deathscythe), Trowa Barton (Gundam Heavyarms), Quatre Raberba (Gundam Sandrock), and Chang Wufei (Shenlong Gundam).
There are also supporting cast members like the series main heroine Relena Peacecraft as well as the main antagonist of the series, the masked pilot Zechs Merquise who pilots the Tallgeese mobile suit.
Possible Overwatch 2 Skins
Just based off of previous crossovers, it’s very possible that the cosmetics coming would mainly be skins for specific characters—with occasional highlight intros and emotes harkening to Gundam Wing.
Some fans think that there would be special skins for characters that actually use mechs like D. Va and Wrecking Ball, but more robotic looking characters like Reinhardt and Genji could easily be given Gundam-inspired skins—Rein can even be given the Deathscythe to replace his hammer.
Sigma does look like he can be the perfect fit for a Zechs skin, and maybe Ashe or Widowmaker can be a good fit for a Relena look.
When's the Announcement?
No date has been announced for the collaboration, but Gundam Wing did premiere on April 7, 1995, so maybe the collab could be announced next week. With Season 16 starting later in April though, maybe Blizzard will be willing to hold things off for a bit just to keep the collab within that time frame.
Season 16 for Overwatch 2 starts April 22. The game is now playable for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation 4|5.
