Terminator 2D: No Fate looks to be a dreamlike retro 2D side-scrolling adventure for fans of the franchise. From what developer Bitmap Bureau has mentioned, this one looks to be a proper love letter to the series.

Terminator has been a hit-or-miss IP in the gaming industry. Some could say the same for the actual films, with Terminator 2: Judgement Day still universally revered as the absolute pinnacle of the franchise.

Released in 1991, T2 was a groundbreaking Sci-Fi action film that fundamentally changed the movie industry with cutting-edge visuals thanks to James Cameron's boundary-pushing technology. The film is timeless, and Bitmap Bureau wants to capture the essence of what a proper 2D side-scrolling arcade shooter would look like if it had been released back in the 90s.

According to Mike Tucker Design Director at Bitmap Bureau, the team set out to craft the "T2 side-scroller we should have had in our youth." In terms of gameplay, No Fate will follow the events of T2: Judgement Day, with players getting a variety of playable characters to control.

Sarah Connor will take center stage in Terminator 2: No Fate

You'll be able to play as Sarah Connor and Arnold Schwarzenegger's iconic T-800 during missions set in the present (technically past) time. On top of that, the developers created unique missions where you'll be able to play as John Connor amid the chaos of the Future Wars.

Of course, expect the intimidating T-1000 to play a pivotal role as an ever-present villainous figure. The developers promised fans they did justice to Robert Patrick’s performance as a stoic, intimidating hunter.

The trailer showcased iconic setpieces from the film, including the bike chase between the T-800 and T-1000, the crew storming the Cyberdyne Systems, and more.

Despite trying to make a faithful recreation of Terminator 2, the developers have confirmed Terminator 2D: No Fate will have multiple endings and new scenarios for players to explore.

Terminator 2D: No Fate will launch on September 5 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via Steam).
