When the Mortal Kombat reboot came out in 2021, there was barely any synergy between the games and films, but it looks like NetherRealm Studios will remedy that with the sequel.
Mortal Kombat II comes to cinemas in October, and some new looks have been revealed for characters Scorpion, Johnny Cage, Kitana, and Shao Kahn. What’s cool is that they’ll also come as skins in Mortal Kombat 1.
MKII in MK1
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon shared a look at the characters in the movie, first played by Hiroyuki Sanada, Karl Urban, Martyn Ford, and Adeline Rudolph. Check this out:
Not shortly after, Boon also shared the incoming skins for the same characters in MK1:
So far, it does look like they’re just going to recycle Scorpion’s costume from the first movie, but Kitana looks very accurate to her more recent game models with the very intricate patterns on her outfit. Cage looks like any washed-up star, but fans hope Urban will eventually take that shirt off and have that signature Johnny Cage look, complete with shades—maybe a tattoo of his name on his chest.
So far, the most significant change comes with Shao Kahn. Through several iterations of the character in MK, Shao has always had half a skull mask revealing his jaw, but for this sequel, they’re covering his full face with a skull. It’ll probably be punched off his face at some point, but for now, he kind of looks like Shredder from the Michael Bay Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
Choose Your Fighter
Though several new faces will appear in the films, some familiar ones will also return. Liu Kang, Jax, and Sonya are still returning to defend EarthRealm in the tournament, but it’s also been said that characters who died in the first film, including Kano, Kung Lao, and Sub-Zero, will return for the sequel.
Should the lore be followed, Sub-Zero would come back as Noob Saibot, but there hasn’t been any news of the ‘good’ Sub-Zero Kuai Liang appearing in this movie.
Test Your Might
It’s unclear what kind of story fans should expect from the second Mortal Kombat film. However, a trilogy is planned, with the first movie taking place before the tournament, the second covering the actual tournament, and the third taking place after the tournament.
Admittedly, the first movie is odd that Shang Tsung doesn’t even get to do much in the film, and now it looks like he will have to compete with Shao Kahn and Quan Chi for the role of the movie’s ultimate villain.
With the films very much just remixing the stories of characters, it’s possible that Shang Tsung and the rest could be making their way to the third film for a final showdown, but until WB Pictures reveals more, all fans can do is guess.
Mortal Kombat II is expected to hit theaters on Oct. 24. Mortal Kombat 1 is now available for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
