Community Effort Orlando (CEO) is about to kick off. One of the biggest fighting game events in the world, perhaps the biggest not named Evo, will feature plenty of exciting new titles, such as 2XKO, Invincible VS, Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game, and Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls.
Being a tournament organizer is daunting, especially for such a big event. Even as someone who regularly hosts locals, they can be a little overwhelming, as you need to have proper setups, spend money on the latest games, DLCs, and even a few cosmetics like costumes to provide extra value for the people joining your events.
Alex Jebailey, one of the FGC’s most beloved TOs, knows about that a little too well. CEO is run almost flawlessly each year, and part of that is the effort the team puts behind it in all aspects of production, including unlocking characters.
A seemingly relic of the past, Marvel Tokon features an unlockable character by playing through the single-player mode: The Champion. Having just come out this past August 6, the organizers had some very interesting homework.
It’s hilariously funny that part of the process to run a smooth tournament includes having to play the Marvel Tokon Episodes Mode to unlock the Champion. Now, don’t worry, he is tournament legal because unlike more infamous boss characters like SNK’s Rugal, he isn’t particularly broken. In fact, it argues he’s one of the worst characters in the game.
Luckily for the staff, you only have to play one of the Episodes, which should take them around 20 minutes if they skip all the cutscenes.
If you don’t want to miss the action, CEO kicks off this August 14. I highly recommend you peep a little bit of the tournament if you’re getting into Tokon, or any other fighting game.
