Marvel Rivals might be a pretty optimized game for consoles and some PCs, but taking a page from Riot Games, NetEase wants to help those playing on lower-end rigs.

The developers will be introducing an experimental feature that should help players with minimum-spec rigs with further performance issues after fans pleaded for better optimization.

Switch Shader Compilation Mode Explained

As officially announced on their page, Marvel Rivals is going to be introducing an experiment feature called Switch Shader Compilation Mode. With the crashes being attributed to high memory consumption for PCs with 16GB RAM or less, the SSCM is set to lessen that and it should help with making the game play smoother on your rig. The list of enhancements include:

  • The shader compilation process will only run when first entering the game after a new game version or graphics driver update.
  • -Game memory usage is dramatically reduced, cutting down on severe FPS drops, frozen visuals, and crashes triggered by memory shortages.

Granted, this is still an experimental mode, and NetEase is well aware of some issues that could be experienced when SSCM is activated. The list of problems are as follows:

  • In each new match, some materials might initially render abnormally for a few frames before returning to their usual state. Rest assured, rendering will behave normally for the remainder of the match.
  • In each new match, you may encounter a slight stutter during the first rendering of certain materials, after which the frames stabilize into a smooth, continuous flow.
  • On systems with a limited number of CPU threads (6 or fewer), enabling both the Switch Shader Compilation Mode and AMD FSR3 Frame Generation concurrently might induce additional stutters.

Who should be Using This Feature?

According to NetEase, this feature is recommended for anyone running the game on a rig with only 16GB of RAM or less. Should any issues be encountered, there is still a support team ready to assist.

If anything, NetEase needs players to use this feature so they can further study it and enhance it for the future. It may not be perfect yet, but that’s what the ‘experimental’ tag is for.

The SSCM will be available when Season 2 launches on April 11. Marvel Rivals is now playable for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5.
