Marvel Cosmic Invasion continues to impress fans of the beat-em-up genre, which isn’t a surprise, given who’s making the game. With a love for the Marvel vs Capcom games and Marvel Comics in the ‘90s, there’s no way this game can fail. This comic brawler also incorporates a feature from a controversial Marvel fighter and makes it work.

The game's official X account revealed that players can choose between two characters and switch between them on the fly. Based on the short video they share, this can be done mid-combo for even more devastating attacks. It also means players can switch between their favorites immediately, so expect many Spider-Man and Venom combos.

Fans might not realize that this new feature in Marvel Cosmic Invasion was originally in the infamous Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite. Before the brilliant MvC: Infinite Beyond mod, this was a fighter fans had mixed opinions about, though people did appreciate the quick tag feature. For all the criticisms this game has faced, most fans agree that this was an excellent mechanic.

Seeing Cosmic Invasion use this quick tag feature isn’t that surprising, since the classic MvC games inspire this beat-em-up. Spider-Man, Storm, and Captain America look like they just came from one of those games. Even Wolverine has attacks that look like Berserk Barrage, even if he has his classic John Byrne costume from the ‘80s.

It’s also worth noting that Marvel Cosmic Invasion isn’t the first beat-em-up to use a quick tag feature. Fans who played the underrated Double Dragon: Gaiden will remember that switching between characters was the most advertised mechanic. We don’t think the new Double Dragon game will use this feature, so seeing Cosmic Invasion bring it back should make fans happy.

There’s a lot of mystery surrounding this comic book brawler, like the full roster of playable characters. We’ve seen seven heroes thus far, but previews have revealed that there will be 15 playable characters. Maybe they’ll be unlockable or get shown in the coming weeks, and we can’t wait to see who else joins this roster.

Fans are still waiting for Tribute Games and Dotemu to drop the release date for Marvel Cosmic Invasion. All we know is that the game will be coming to consoles and PC later this year, giving beat-em-up fans something remarkable to look forward to.

Based on the success of Shredder’s Revenge and Streets of Rage 4, we’re sure this will be another hit beat-em-up when it comes out.
