Mario Kart World was beloved on release, with fans enjoying the Switch 2 visuals, familiar gameplay, and some of the new game modes. As a Switch 2 launch title, it’s a huge success, and fans will likely bring this out for multiplayer sessions until Nintendo’s next console comes out.
Unfortunately, a new update has made Mario Kart World a horrible experience online.
Fans on social media found out the hard way that the game is going to be bad online. This post on X from Invaluable shows that players who pick Random are now forced to do Intermission matches. Most players want to do the traditional three-lap races for a good challenge, so being forced to do these quick races has made gamers lose interest.
Since a good portion of players like to race with their friends through the internet, an update like this is not what anyone wanted. Some players might be switching to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe again unless the issue is resolved.
Numerous players are now claiming that Mario Kart World has been “killed,” with many wanting this odd update to be fixed. Based on the fan reaction, it would be in Nintendo’s best interest if they listened sooner rather than later, since they are the paying audience after all. Only time will tell if Nintendo is going to fix this complaint, but they probably should.
Online play is one of the main reasons to keep playing MKW, as it lets players test their skills and see how they do against others. Racing against the AI is fine and all, but real competition comes from actual gamers, hence players wanting this update to be fixed immediately. If this doesn’t get fixed, more competitive gamers will have to plan out local co-op days, which aren’t always easy.
This is the first major blight that Mario Kart World has faced, aside from the complaints about it being an $80 game. With fans expecting this game to get updated in the future, Nintendo will need to learn from this, as online play is a major fixture for this series. If they’re going to charge fans for NSO again next year, they have to listen.
