Mario Kart World keeps impressing fans with each new gameplay clip, showing how big this kart racer will be. We don’t know if this game is worth $80, but it’s showcasing the Switch 2’s power well. The Free Roam mode gives fans good single-player content, but it could be better.
While we approve of copying Forza Horizon, Mario Kart World should consider copying the Adventure Mode from Crash Team Racing. Having objectives to complete is good, but a more structured single-player campaign with unique races is better. It hasn’t happened yet in this series, but at least Nintendo should consider doing it once.
CTR’s Adventure Mode is still the pinnacle of good single-player content for kart racers. Some fans will argue that Diddy Kong Racing on the N64 did it first, but we can all agree that CTR did it better. This mode can be experienced by current-gen console owners thanks to the remake, but it’s a shame that PC owners are still missing out.
Like Diddy Kong Racing, CTR’s Adventure Mode lets players drive around a hub as they choose races to play through. Players have to get first place to unlock more levels, and then, a boss race. These boss races were good challenges and a throwback to classic Crash, as Pinstripe, Papu Papu, and Ripper Roo were bosses in this mascot’s first game.
Nintendo’s various sports games already have silly story modes, so we don’t know why Mario Kart World hasn’t followed suit. Imagine going through a campaign against Waluigi or Bowser, before a more evil racing threat appears. They can even incorporate parts of the Free Roam mode with big hubs to explore, making this mode feel bigger.
An Adventure Mode would give players even more content after completing the Grand Prix and missions from Free Roam mode. We know these games sell well based on name value and local multiplayer alone, but having multiple single-player modes would almost make the $80 worth it. Not completely worth it, but fans would justify it a bit more with plenty of good single-player content.
Then again, with online updates becoming a normality, Mario Kart World could always add more missions. It wouldn’t beat a structured single-player campaign, but if some of those missions are unique boss races, that will work. We just wish Nintendo would swallow their pride and take something from Crash Bandicoot and Diddy Kong.
