Nintendo has unveiled Diddy Kong’s slight redesign, after not appearing in the first Donkey Kong: Bananza gameplay trailer. With theories claiming this might be a prequel to Super Mario Odyssey, fans were worried this game would abandon DK’s best sidekick. It doesn’t help that a certain celebrity with “Diddy” in his name has been sued for horrific actions.
Luckily, Nintendo’s branding is stronger than celebrity controversies, so Diddy Kong will remain a major part of the company’s games. In fact, we think he’s the only “Diddy” that matters now, so let’s separate this fictional character from the celebrity accused of doing terrible things. The only thing this character has done wrong was be overpowered in Smash.
In all seriousness, we are glad that this iconic character will remain a part of the Donkey Kong branding from here on out. We hope he plays a vital role in the Switch 2’s Donkey Kong: Bananza, even if it seemingly focuses on the big guy and his rock friend. Diddy is popular enough to be in his own games, so let’s see what Nintendo has planned for him in their new console.
The anxiety fans had for this character may have been overblown, since he was still a big part of Country Returns HD. Granted, Diddy’s with Donkey Kong the whole time in that adventure, but any removal from that game would have meant serious trouble. Since he’s in all of the marketing for that title, we just assumed Diddy was safe.
Fans were bound to make jokes about Diddy Kong and the celebrity who allegedly hurt some people. Because their names are similar, fans thought the character’s future was uncertain. His lack of appearances in the initial Donkey Kong: Bananza trailers was concerning, but that’s now changed since he’s been revealed.
We also wouldn’t be surprised if the character ends up appearing in the next Super Mario Bros. Movie, rumored to be called Super Mario World. Diddy only made a brief appearance in the first film, so we imagine that he’ll get a better role in the sequel. Hopefully, they choose an actor who can do the character justice, but they’ll just pick a big name celebrity knowing how Illumination works.
It’s just good to know that Diddy Kong’s Nintendo future is a safe one. He will probably get plenty of appearances in the coming years, whether it’s a spin-off title or an appearance in the next Smash Bros. game. Let’s see what happens to the one and only Diddy.
