Earlier this month, Xbox announced a mass layoff following Microsoft's restructuring of its gaming division. One of the studios most impacted was id Software, which lost over 136 employees (over half its staff).

However, that reportedly hasn't deterred the studio from moving forward with a new DOOM game.

On July 11, The Verge's Tom Warren took to X (formerly Twitter) to state a new DOOM game was in the works.

In a quote tweet, he claimed the layoffs within id Software were deep, but haven't turned them into a support studio. He then stated the studio is in the early stages of a new DOOM game.

The tweet he quotes was actually from id Software themselves. In their post, they acknowledged how the studio was impacted by the sudden termination of half their staff. However, they reassured players that the cuts were spread across teams and they still have the crew to build games.

Though their statement neither confirmed nor denied a new DOOM game, they noted that their team size now is similar to when they were making DOOM (2016). Id Software also noted that they are committed to making great games.

Id Software has yet to release a statement regarding the supposed new DOOM game, but chances are we will have to wait a while before we receive any official details, as the game is in early phases.

Their latest title, DOOM: The Dark Ages, launched on May 25, 2025, and takes place years prior to DOOM (2016), following the Doom Slayer's efforts to save humanity in a war against Hell. The game was released for Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
