- Quick Answer: Pokemon Winds and Waves introduces exciting, revolutionary cooperative multiplayer mechanics, allowing friends to share open-world exploration, navigate rough waters, and tackle story-driven raid battles seamlessly.
The Pokemon franchise has been with me for years. It defined my childhood and remains a staple part of my adulthood today.
The games are almost flawless, except for one thing: the multiplayer experience. In previous entries, we got fleeting tastes of co-op gaming, but it wasn't enough to feel like we were actually going on an adventure with our friends.
Based on what we've seen from Winds and Waves, however, it looks like we'll get an upgraded shared experience, and I hope Game Freak has transformed multiplayer into a core pillar for players.
Winds and Waves Could Deliver the Perfect Co-Op Experience
Game Freak has tried inserting open-world co-op in Pokemon games before. Scarlet & Violet allowed players to run around Paldea together in Union Circle, and while that was exciting to begin with, the novelty wore off pretty quickly. At the end of the day, we were just two people running solo paths in the same world.

There were no shared objectives, no puzzles to solve together, and no reason to actually play together. It felt less like a co-op adventure and more like two people playing a solo game next to each other.
However, this seems to be changing in Winds and Waves, and I'm excited.

Some leaks have suggested that you can assist your friends in their games and participate in challenges together. Not only is this miles more collaborative than Scarlet & Violet, but I think it makes sense with the new ocean setting. I mean, navigating open waters and exploring uncharted archipelagos is definitely not something to be done alone.

Imagine your friend is taking the wheel to steer through rough currents while you're using a scope to spot wild Pokemon. An environment like this naturally creates moments where friends have to rely on each other to complete quests.
Another thing that's revolutionary is the co-op raid battles. From what's been shared online, you and your friend can play raid battles integrated into the story routes and post-game. If helping a friend complete a quest or defeat a boss raid yields meaningful, shared progress for both trainers, co-op will finally feel like a rewarding, interconnected feature rather than a gimmick.
The fact that we might be able to play with our friends in the open world as well as the actual story is unheard of in Pokemon, and I'm glad we could finally be getting it with Winds and Waves. I'm so ready to actually live my dream of being a Trainer with my friends - even if it is just on my Switch 2.
