I lose my hype in Los Santos!

  • Primary Subject: Grand Theft Auto 6 [November 2026 Release / Current Generation Consoles]
  • Key Update: Prolonged development delays, endless live-service milking, and sparse gameplay reveals have drained fan enthusiasm, turning what was once a guaranteed day-one purchase into an afterthought.
  • Status: Confirmed
  • Last Verified: July 23, 2026
  • Quick Answer: Many veteran players are losing interest in GTA 6 due to the lengthy 12-year wait between sequels, sparse gameplay marketing, and shifting personal priorities.

I hate how much of a clickbait the title makes this article out to be, but there is no exaggeration over this topic: I just lost interest in the supposed GTA 6. Rockstar Games has been putting out banger after banger, fully proving that good games are worth the wait no matter how long they take to come out! But I feel that with Grand Theft Auto VI, they really pushed how long fans are willing to wait for the next entry. I was in high school the day the last GTA game was released, and now I’m a working adult with bills to pay and tons of games sitting in my Steam library. I just cannot get on the hype train for GTA 6 anymore.

There’s a mindset out there that dictates that absence breeds longing, and I think that’s the exact mindset that Rockstar wished to uphold here. Rockstar is responsible for some of the biggest IPs in gaming, and they have no issue swinging that stick around because they have every right to. Companies like Bethesda, Epic, and Rockstar have managed to stay at the top of the food chain through successful live-service online video games such as Fallout 76, Fortnite, and GTA Online, respectively. To some, this may be enough to tide them over the long wait for the next mainline game, but to others like me, it just inadvertently killed the hype by milking their cash cow to death.

Another thing that has bothered me with the GTA 6 I marketing is how there is close to no actual gameplay shown for the game. Sure, there have been leaks and rumors of in-game footage being shown in the trailers, but that isn’t substantial enough to get me on the hype train either. The only thing that’s been shown thus far is some crumbs of the story and a showcase of hi-fi modern graphics, which are definitely impressive! But I’ll be honest, looking at the graphical jump makes me GPU shudder in its place.

Speaking of the story, I won’t be coy about it; we really do play Rockstar Games for the story. I was thinking for a while about why I was so excited for GTA V’s release but feel indifferent for GTA 6’s, and it all came down to the story. I expected the gameplay to be smoother, the graphics to be better, and the story to be a blockbuster masterpiece with some of the best written characters to come out of gaming. Because going on a mindless traffic rampage with a 6-star wanted level can get tiring quickly when you don’t have any motivation behind it.

It’s also worth noting that the gaming market these days has become incredibly dense! Indie game studios are releasing some bangers under the radar, bigger studios are releasing blockbuster entries, and not everyone will have the time nor money to spend on a game this expensive. Especially if you recall that GTA 6’s expensive price point comes without a physical copy of the game, which is an entirely different discussion on its own. Every time I think of how hype I could be for GTA 6, I always realize that I’d also have a laundry list of games to tear through before I can purchase GTA 6 without feeling a tinge of capitalist guilt!

But then again, this is GTA 6 we’re talking about. I don’t want to discredit other gamers’ excitement about the game, nor should they care about this grumpy man on the internet shaking his fist at the clouds. As dense as the video game market has become, there just isn’t anything out there that scratches the itch that a GTA game could. Saints Row tried (miserably) to catch that same energy as GTA games while the franchise had a long bout of absence, but there is truly nothing like a Rockstar mainline GTA game.

Now with all my gripes and complaints about the lack of hype I have for GTA 6, I must also admit that I will be playing the game…eventually. Years back with the release of GTA V, I saw the game as an immediate day 1 buy, but I just cannot for the life of me see GTA 6 in the same vein. I’m sure the game is as fun and as impressive as Rockstar games have been in the past, but there’s no longer any urgency in me to sleep outside of a Gamestop just to get a disc on release day.

What worries me is that this may be the case for video games moving forward. There hasn’t been a game announced where I wanted to get my hands on a copy day 1 (save for the new Fallout remasters), and I believe that’s the industry’s fault. We’ll just have to see what happens when the gameplay trailers eventually drop, but until then, GTA 6 is going to the middle of the pile.
