The recent Marvel Rivals update has been bad for Steam Deck owners, turning this intense multiplayer experience into a stuttering mess. It annoyed many players since the game was pretty playable before this update. Luckily, there is a way to make this version work, and it should suffice until NetEase Games releases a proper update.

Considering how games like Apex Legends 2 are no longer playable on Deck, it’s good that this shooter still has a chance on Valve’s handheld. While this mini PC is starting to show its age, many fans enjoy using it, and developers constantly aim for that “Verified” status. Hopefully, future updates will be more mindful of this handheld.

Now, without further ado, here’s how to improve the Steam Deck performance of Marvel Rivals.

Proton Hotfix

Until a new update is released, fans must change the game’s compatibility to Proton Hotfix to make the game playable on Deck. Luckily, this process is fairly simple, so fans do not need to worry. Follow the instructions below, and you’ll be playing Rivals again soon.

  • Go to Marvel Rivals
  • Click the gear icon
  • Then choose Properties
  • Press Compatibility
  • Choose Proton Hotfix as the Steam Play compatibility tool

Make sure that you change the proton compatibility while the game is off. If you turned it on, didn’t like how it performed, and changed the compatibility, the results won’t be immediate. Just turn the game off, change the compatibility, and turn it on again.

Turn off Frame Generation

If players are content with the performance of Marvel Rivals after switching to Proton Hotfix, you don’t have to follow this. However, for those who still feel like the game is feeling stuttery or floaty, turning off Frame Generation might help.

  • Go to the gear icon in Rivals
  • Choose Settings
  • Pick Display
  • Head to AMD FSR3 Frame Regeneration and turn it off

Some players might prefer Frame Regeneration since it ensures a smoother framerate, but the characters can feel a bit floaty if this option is left on. Once again, if you don’t mind the game with Frame Regeneration, feel free to ignore this option.

That’s everything we know about improving Marvel Rivals on Steam Deck until NetEase Games releases a proper update. For more on Rivals, check out new information about Emma Frost and the game’s best Vanguards.
