I've clocked in hundreds of hours across different cozy games. Farming sims, management sims, dress-up games - you name it, I've played the lot. And because I've played so many cozy titles, I've developed an eye for which games are actually worth my money.

Most of the time, when games focus on cute aesthetics and bright, pastel branding, I assume the mechanics aren't good. Still, I gave Hello Kitty Island Adventure a shot because of my longstanding love for all things Sanrio despite being a Kuromi girl. However, I was pleasantly surprised that when I started playing, I instantly became hooked.

At the start of the game, you are on an airplane with Hello Kitty and friends to visit the Big Adventures Park. However, due to a plane malfunction, everyone is forced to evacuate by floating down with balloons, subsequently beginning your life on this new island with all your friends.

Usually, simulation games like this feel slow and tedious, but this wasn't the case in Hello Kitty Island Adventure. Most of the stores were already on the island when you landed, and each character found a place to call theirs. Yes, you'd help them find some materials to accomplish quests, but they were typically found all around the island and would reap some major rewards.

One thing that definitely stood out was the interior design and cabin customization. Of course, you can build your own home to your tastes, but there's the added job of decorating cabins to attract guests, like Dear Daniel and Pompompurin's Papa. Each guest has their own aesthetic, and you need to learn specific furniture tags, hunt down certain pieces, and curate cabins to get visitors to stay on the island for a few days.

Nothing happens if you aren't able to do it, but I loved being able to craft my cabins to a certain niche and see my guests compliment my interior design. For me, it's more satisfying than building in New Horizons, where villagers barely give your hard work the time of day.

Another great thing is just how unique the map is. There are plenty of areas that are personal to each character. Hello Kitty, My Melody, and Tuxedo Sam all have stores by the main beach. Hangyodon, on the other hand, has an underwater Comedy Club at Rainbow Reef. Little Twin Stars reside in Cloud Island, and Wish Me Mell is in Merry Meadows. Aggretsuko typically stays in the Hot Springs area located on Mount Hothead.

Each area is incredibly detailed and is made to perfectly match the aesthetic of each character. They are all distinct, and it really makes you feel as if you're traversing through different biomes. It's one of the best parts of the game.
