- Quick Answer: In an IGN interview, Rockstar revealed that GTA 6 story missions will provide multiple choices, such as multiple escape routes during police chases.
We are now almost a month away from the release of GTA 6, and more information about the title keeps dropping through different sources. This time, IGN has released a special interview with Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North.
In the feature, Nelson touched on finding a balance between freedom and world-building when it comes to missions and confirmed this game will offer more freedom than previous entries.
"...with this game we have made a very conscious effort to open things up where possible, without compromising the quality of the experience," the studio head explained.
He used the mission shown at the start of the Netflix extended preview as an example, stating that there are "multiple routes out of that tower block." In other words, players can choose to pick another route to escape the carnage instead of taking the elevator and jumping out of the window from the apartment shown.
Another example is the police chase after Jason and Lucia meet Raul for the first time. Nelson explained that the first part is on rails because the player is controlling Jason and needs to shoot at the cops while Lucia drives. However, when the player switches to Lucia, they are free to drive wherever they want to complete the escape.
There will be an optimal escape route, but it's just a suggestion, as the player can choose to follow it or take a different route.

The studio head hopes that opening up missions and giving players more choice will make them feel like an activity from the free roam mode in their efforts to blur the lines between the two types of content.
