- Quick Answer: GTA 6 is eligible for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2026 because its November 19 launch precedes the official November 20 cutoff.
It was previously believed that GTA 6 would not be eligible to be nominated for this year's The Game Awards ceremony.
Many assumed that since the game releases on November 19, a little late for the event's cutoff date, given previous years. This would have been a major bummer, as many believed GTA 6 was capable of sweeping every possible category.
Well, it turns out that might still happen.
GTA 6 Is Eligible to be Nominated at The Game Awards 2026
It was recently revealed that GTA 6 will officially be eligible to be nominated at this year's The Game Awards. This, of course, includes a possible nomination for Game of the Year.

According to The Game Awards official website, games must be commercially available by November 20, 2026, at 9:00 PM PST to be eligible for nomination this year. This means that, by a hair, GTA 6 makes the cut.
If nominated (and let's be real - it probably will be), GTA 6 will be up against some heavy-hitters. Some possible stand-outs include Resident Evil Requiem, 007 First Light, and Control Resonant. It wouldn't be surprising if The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is coming out on November 5, gets nominated as well.
However, few games have received the level of fanfare GTA 6 has. What will truly lock in GTA 6's wins is how reviewers will rate the game. These are expected to come out a little before the game releases, which will give us a deeper look at what Vice City will be like.
The Game Awards will be held on December 10, 2026. What categories do you think GTA 6 will be nominated in?
