Glitchy Saitama Completely Misses the Point About Fortnite Crossovers

One Punch Man X Fortnite

Fortnite has become the home for all sorts of crossovers, from Marvel Super Heroes to Star Wars' Jedi and even John Wick from, uh, John Wick. Seeing these characters from all sides of pop culture will always feel surreal, even if each addition lessens that reaction. That doesn’t mean fans can’t appreciate good crossovers, which is why the collab with One Punch Man is a bit disappointing.

On paper, it’s nice to finally see Saitama, Genos, and Terrible Tornado in the game, as fans have been requesting them for years. Plus, seeing them mix up with Goku and Naruto should make for plenty of viral moments. It’s just a shame that Viz Media and Epic Games didn’t go all the way with this crossover.

Will the Real Saitama Please Stand Up?

In an incredibly disappointing move, the Fortnite version of One Punch Man’s protagonist has a purposeful glitch added when using him. Apparently, this glitch is intentional because this isn’t actually the version of Saitama who ends his foes in one punch. Rather, this is some kind of hologram, illusion, or dream, but they really want you to know he’s not the “real” version.

Seeing companies be this protective of their properties is silly, but to see those restrictions in a game like Fortnite is even worse. This is a shooter where Batman and Spider-Man, two heroes who have sworn to never kill, can use guns to shoot down the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. It’s obviously not the “real” them, so needing glitches to snap fans back to reality about Saitama is pretty pathetic.

Don’t Take Fortnite Seriously

Viz Media being this protective about One Punch Man makes some sense, as they even did it with their video game. The OPM fighting game actually had a “Dream” version of Saitama that can fight with everyone else, while his “real” version can end anyone in one punch. It’s cute for that game because it’s set within the show’s continuity, so we’ll allow it there, but not for the Epic Games shooter.

No one in Fortnite is overpowered, as everyone is essentially a skin version that can use a variety of skills and weapons. There are events where players can control overpowered versions of Superman and Thanos, so they can do the same with One Punch Man’s Saitama if they want. Still, they don’t have to make the base skin glitchy because he can’t kill people with one punch, as the game is always balanced.

Whatever the case, it is good to have these skins in Fortnite. One Punch Man will stay a popular franchise for many years, and that’s not going to change anytime soon. It would just be nice if Viz Media didn’t take this franchise too seriously, especially since it’s already a parody of superheroes and shonen anime.
