George R.R. Martin may have several Game of Thrones spinoffs in the air, but the celebrity author is also behind the lore of FromSoftware’s hit game, Elden Ring.
The game was such a huge hit when it came out that there has been buzz about an Elden Ring movie in the works. GRRM has come out to give fans a possible update.
Lands Between on the Big Screen
During an appearance at IGN Fan Fest 2025, Martin was asked about the status of a sequel to Elden Ring, to which he instead sidestepped and teased, “Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring.”
Martin doesn’t go into that much detail about how far the movie has gone into development, but he does say that his engagement with Winds of Winter could lead to him not being so involved with the movie adaptation. He says:
“We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know,” he said. “I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do.”
FromSoftware is Looking for a ‘Strong Partner’
Besides Martin, other members of the Elden Ring crew have teased before that they were interested in a movie being made. FromSoftware president Hidetaka Miyazaki had told The Guardian:
“I don’t see any reason to deny another interpretation or adaptation of Elden Ring, a movie for example… But I don’t think myself, or FromSoftware, have the knowledge or ability to produce something in a different medium.”
Should a movie take place, Miyazaki says they would need ‘a very strong partner’ to come into play. “We’d have to build a lot of trust and agreement on whatever it is we’re trying to achieve, but there’s interest, for sure.”
House of the Tarnished
Though Elden Ring has mostly been about gameplay and game design, Martin was free to infuse the world with backstory—a story told not through the main narrative but through the several info boxes that come with the items and bosses.
With the game being a completely different animal, there’s a lot of room for an Elden Ring spinoff to establish all the major players of the Lands Between. If Martin’s previous work has taught anyone anything, well-established lore makes for a good backbone for several spinoffs—and the writers can just around the timeline wherever they please.
Admittedly, Martin has been very public with his displeasure with the direction of House of the Dragon, so maybe Elden Ring already has an idea of what to do to be able to stay true to the lore that GRRM has established. Regardless of Martin’s involvement, fans are just hoping he finally finishes his long-overdue book so that he can get on with his other pet projects that aren’t connected to A Song of Ice and Fire.
Although an Elden Ring movie has yet to be officially announced, the game is now playable on Xbox One, PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 4|5.
