A director's comment hints at the real reason behind shifting out of a crowded release window.

  • Key Update: Playground Games director Ralph Fulton strongly implied that Fable was pushed from October 2026 to February 2027 to avoid competing directly with GTA 6.

  • Quick Answer: Fable was delayed to February 2027 primarily to avoid direct launch window competition with Rockstar Games' GTA 6.

It's no surprise that game studios are avoiding releasing their games in November this year.

The most anticipated game of the year, GTA 6, is set to release on November 19, 2026. This one title has caused studios to avoid the November window like the plague, with less than a handful of titles coming out that year (and with drastically different demographics).

One such title is the Fable reboot - and the game's director has (kinda) admitted it himself.

Fable Director Hints That They Wanted to Avoid GTA 6 At All Costs

During an interview with IGN, Fable director Ralph Fulton claimed the studio wasn't scared of "other big games" - except for one. Spoiler alert: it's probably GTA 6.

Fulton was quoted saying, "We're a big game ourselves. We hold ourselves to high standards. I'm happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games." However, he admitted there was one game he was happy to avoid entirely.

While he didn't specify, it's not hard to guess he meant GTA 6. Fable was originally set to release in October - just a month before GTA 6 releases. And while they seemed to originally double down on that time frame on their social media accounts, Fable was ultimately delayed to February 2027.

He claimed that the reason the game was delayed is obvious, stating, "I think the rationale behind moving us out of October, the date that we were in previously, is pretty apparent to everybody."

It seems he has subtly confirmed that Playground Games chose to delay the game to prevent clashing with GTA 6. However, it seems they aren't afraid of going head-to-head with other major titles in February. For reference, Persona 4 Revival, God of War: Laufey, and Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis are all coming out in February next year.

Will you be purchasing Fable? The game will be available on the Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
