- Quick Answer: The producers of Dragon Quest XII have revealed that the game has gone through a restart in development and will now be titled Beyond Dreams.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Dragon Quest series, Square Enix has made several announcements on the franchise's future. One of the announcements is related to Dragon Quest XII.
The game was originally announced in 2021 with the title The Flames of Fate. However, as the executive producer, Yosuke Saito, explained, "work on the original version (The Flames of Fate) hit a lot of hurdles along the way."
"...as we kept talking to Mr. Horii and pinned down what a mainline Dragon Quest game should look like, we decided to move things around and start over from scratch."
The game will now be officially titled Dragon Quest XII: Beyond Dreams, featuring a new logo to go along with the name.

The producer and Yuji Horii, one of the game's designers, also presented a short footage of in-development gameplay, giving us a glimpse at how it could look in the final stages. The footage shows different areas before revealing the main character exploring the world, and other secondary characters making brief appearances.
The main character is said to have strange visions in their sleep, which is why he appears with significant eye bags. This theme also alludes to the new title, but the producers didn't reveal much beyond that (no pun intended).
Here is the video in question for those who haven't checked it out:
A release date for the title wasn't provided, but Horii promised that the game will come with characters from the late Akira Toriyama and Koichi Sugiyama's music.
