The Nintendo Switch 2 does support 4K resolution, but only in certain conditions.
The Switch 2 bumps up from the original's 1080p docked and 720p handheld, now offering 4K support when docked for a big boost in graphics on the TV.
Is Switch 2 4K?
To be clear, 4K output is only possible when the console is connected to the dock and used with a compatible 4K display.
This configuration allows the Switch 2 to output games in 4K resolution at 60 frames per second. It also features High Dynamic Range (HDR), boosting highlights, shadows, and color contrast. Put together, this makes for a much more immersive and cinematic experience than the first Switch could handle.
The upgraded internals of the console play a key role in this power boost. Nintendo hasn't shared all the details on its custom Nvidia processor, but it's clear the system can handle 4K visuals in docked mode without losing stability.
The new dock comes with a built-in cooling fan to manage heat during higher-resolution use. Handheld mode tops out at 1080p, but it's far from being a downgrade.
The 7.9-inch LCD display supports up to 120fps in compatible games and features HDR and variable refresh rate (VRR) to reduce stuttering and frame drops.
Handheld mode may not offer 4K, but you can still see improvements in clarity, responsiveness, and visual punch on the smaller screen. Keep in mind that 4K output is dependent on the game.
Not all titles will support 4K, but developers can now create enhanced Switch 2 editions or patches to leverage the hardware's capabilities.
Nintendo's top franchises, such as Tears of the Kingdom and Mario Kart World, are built to take full advantage of the new system's potential.
This gives Nintendo's unique lineup the visual boost it has long deserved.
