  • Quick Answer: This article details the unique and reference-filled fighting mechanics of Deadpool in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls, focusing on his 'Fourth Wall Attacks'.

Deadpool in Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls might be the coolest fighting game character ever conceived. I say this without having even played him yet—just by looking at the sheer amount of detail and love Arc System Works poured into Wade Wilson for their 4v4 tag fighter.

It’s no secret that Deadpool is the king of breaking the fourth wall. Many interpretations of the character lean too hard into annoying memes and on-the-nose references to remain enjoyable, but Arc System Works’ version might genuinely be the best of the bunch, at least in the gaming space. While in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Deadpool could beat opponents with the game’s UI bar, the Tokon version builds a whole core mechanic around his antics: Fourth Wall Attacks.

I love that his self-awareness as a video game character is directly integrated into his primary gameplay gimmick. It would have been easy to settle for a few clever intro/outro quotes, a visual gag in a move or two, or a funny Super. Instead, ArcSys fully committed to the bit.

Without getting too bogged down in technical details: whenever Deadpool has any amount of recoverable health, his medium attacks turn into Fourth Wall Attacks. Each of these is a perfectly crafted homage, often stacking multiple layers of references to classic fighting games.

Through Fourth Wall Attacks, Deadpool gains access to iconic moves like Tekken’s Electric Wind God Fist, Guilty Gear’s Totsugeki Dolphin, Mortal Kombat’s Scorpion spear ("Get Over Here!" complete with a "Toasty!" pop-up), and even Marvel vs. Capcom’s infamous Dr. Doom Foot Dive.

My absolute favorite is the "Random Bullsh*t Go!" move, which packs three distinct references into a single projectile: first, it references the classic Moon Knight meme (which many still mistake for an actual comic panel); second, the projectile itself is the head of Polygon Man, the final boss from PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale; and third, Deadpool throws it while mirroring SSJ Vegeta's exact projectile pose from Dragon Ball FighterZ.

And that’s just scratching the surface of his kit. If you were wondering how deep the roster's move-lists would go, Wade Wilson is clearly going to be among the most technical characters in the entire game.

It is so fittingly in-character that Deadpool's flashiest moves trigger only after taking damage—and that he can actively inflict self-damage just to enter that state. Seeing this in action moved him from a character I was mildly curious about straight to my day-one main when Marvel Tokon drops.
