Danganronpa 2x2’s Ridiculous PC System Requirements Are Pure Despair

Demanding an RTX 4070 for a visual novel makes Danganronpa 2x2's PC specs completely absurd.

  • Key Update: An opinion feature critiques Spike Chunsoft for releasing outrageously high recommended PC system requirements for Danganronpa 2x2, including an RTX 4070 and 32GB of RAM for a 2D visual novel.

  • Quick Answer: Danganronpa 2x2 requires surprisingly high PC specs, listing an Nvidia RTX 4070 and 32GB of RAM under recommended requirements despite also releasing on Nintendo Switch.

I don't know anyone more excited about Danganronpa 2x2 than I am.

I played all the previous Danganronpa games on my Nintendo Switch. I had good memories having my Switch docked and experiencing the game on my big screen - so much so that Danganronpa is one of my favorite game franchises of all time. After my partner and I invested in a nice, 34-inch curved monitor, I considered pre-ordering the game on Steam and playing it on my PC instead of my Switch 2.

But after seeing the official PC system requirements, I've decided not to do that. For a visual novel, it's excessive - and quite frankly, inaccessible for a lot of gamers.

Danganronpa 2x2's PC System Requirements Are Outrageous

I first saw the PC system requirements while scrolling on X (Twitter). Initially, I thought it wasn't official and was a gag being shared around by the gaming community. After all, how can a visual novel ask for an RTX 4070 and 32GB of RAM for the recommended specs? Especially when the game consists of 2D sprites, dialogues, and some mini-games.

PC Specifications: Minimum Specs - OS: A 64-bit processor and operating system required, Windows 11 (64-bit); Processor: Intel Core i5-14400 or AMD Ryzen 5 4500; Memory: 8 GB RAM; Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 6060 or AMD Radeon RX 6600; DirectX Version: DirectX 12; Storage: 40 GB of free space; Sound card: Windows Compatible Audio Device. Recommended Specs - OS: A 64-bit processor and operating system required, Windows 11 (64-bit); Processor: Intel Core i7-14700 or AMD Ryzen 7 7700; Memory: 32 GB RAM; Graphic: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6800; DirectX Version: DirectX 12; Storage: 40 GB of free space; Sound card: Windows Compatible Audio Device.

However, it didn't take me long to realize it was real and from the official website. I was immediately confused. It's not like Danganronpa 2x2 features an open world- it's a visual novel, for Pete's sake!

In a world where 32GB of DDR5 RAM can cost you $1,250, gatekeeping the recommended setting behind these specs means only those fortunate enough to afford these components can run Danganronpa 2x2 the way it's meant to be played. Now, unless we get to fight Monokuma in active combat at the end of the game, I see literally no reason for a visual memory to demand memory specs higher than some 3D games.

You know what's even funnier? Danganronpa 2x2 will be coming to the original Nintendo Switch. If hardware from 2017 can handle 2x2, why does a PC rig need an RTX 4070 to run it at its recommended settings? I'm hoping Spike Chunsoft just made a terrible mistake or accidentally uploaded the wrong sheet, because it's not making any sense.

System requirements are meant to give players a realistic look at what they need for peak performance, but Danganronpa 2x2's recommended specs feel like a slap in the face for PC players. Demanding high-end graphics cards and 32GB of RAM is unnecessary and makes the game inaccessible for players with budget setups that can't afford shelling out that much on components.

Spike Chunsoft, you better revisit this and revise the numbers before despair overcomes players - and forces them to cancel their pre-orders.
