Black Ops 7's New Direction Could Win Over Non-CoD Fans

There’s been a lot of discourse about Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, with most of it being on the negative side. Many fans feel that this departure from the modern warfare formula isn’t a good direction for the series, as Advanced Warfare showed back in the day. It’s clear that all of this sci-fi stuff isn’t for hardcore CoD fans, and that’s fine.

However, as a non-CoD fan, this writer sees creative levels, fun weapons, and robots that look really fun to blow up. Even some of the trippy levels that ticked off diehard CoD fans were fairly impressive to me. That giant dude that many people are making fun of? Looks like one heck of a boss fight, don’t know what to tell you.

Black Ops 7 doesn’t look like it’s going to please fans of the Modern Warfare variety. Even other Black Ops fans are annoyed because the series started as a grounded shooter. However, for those who are into DOOM and Halo, this looks like something fun to play.

No Realism? No Problem!

I get why Call of Duty fans don’t like the current direction of Black Ops 7, especially after some of those Fortnite-esque crossovers. While this writer doesn’t care about skins in an FPS, he does care about fun-looking levels to blast through, and this game seems to deliver it in spades. Sure, those twisty roads and hellish environments aren’t very Call of Duty, but they look really action-packed.

Keep in mind, I’m a gamer who doesn’t care about realism in games. GTA 6 doesn’t look appealing to me. I’d rather play Tears of the Kingdom or Marvel’s Spider-Man over that title any day. Different strokes for different folks, and that’s my current mentality with this new Call of Duty game.

While it’s a shame that hardcore fans feel so alienated by this entry, non-CoD fans like me might find something fun in Black Ops 7.

There’s a Twin-Stick Shooter? With Zombies?

Another weird thing about Black Ops 7 that appealed to me is the twin-stick shooter in the game’s zombie mode. Called Dead Ops Arcade 4 (there are three more of these?), it looks like a pretty polished experience. Maybe it will be simpler than I like, but there’s something in my brain that really likes seeing waves of zombies killed from a top-down perspective.

Zombies have been a prominent part of Call of Duty over the years, so it’s not surprising to see the feature return here. Fans all over the world just love shooting zombies, so seeing two different modes where you shoot them to kingdom come has so much appeal. Chances are, this writer is going to play that over the main campaign.

I’m Not Everyone

Despite my interest in Black Ops 7, I understand that not everyone will have this perspective. Fans of the series want to shoot other people in a more grounded setting, and that’s okay, even if it sounds boring to this writer. Battlefield 6 looks like a fun time, and it’s easy to see why the other CoD fans are migrating to that shooter.

Personally, I see some potential in BO7 because it’s a lot of things the CoD franchise isn’t. Seeing the realistic military themes get pushed away in favor of robot soldiers and twisty level designs appeals to me, even if it doesn’t appeal to everyone else.

Now if only Activision would make the game Steam Deck verified…
