- Quick Answer: Fallout 5 is now in pre-production, and Bethesda is also working on remasters of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
Just days after Xbox's major restructure and layoffs, Bethesda has provided a new update on what's happening behind the scenes.
After speculation and expectation from players, the developer has finally confirmed that Fallout 5 is in pre-production. This is expected to be the next big project in Bethesda's timeline after The Elder Scrolls VI, which is currently their main focus.

The game is being developed with Creation Engine 3, the same engine used for Starfield and The Elder Scrolls VI. This has some community members worried, as the game could look dated by the time it releases, given that we are years away from that. The studio didn't mention whether the engine will receive an update.
Fallout 5 isn't the only news regarding the post-apocalyptic franchise, as both Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas are getting remasters. Bethesda didn't provide any release dates, but it did mention that they have been working on both, meaning they shouldn't be too far from release. We could see a shadow drop, similar to how The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered was released.

On top of that, Bethesda also announced that Obsidian Entertainment has started developing a new Fallout game, just like previously reported. No details were provided about this game, but it appears it's not Fallout 5 or any of the remasters.
A report from Jason Schreier explained that Obsidian was hard at work on an Avowed sequel, but they were forced to cancel it and shift focus to this. Josh Sawyer, the director of Fallout: New Vegas, is reportedly directing this new mysterious game.
It seems Asha Sharma's push to focus on major franchises is now reflecting on Bethesda's current plan for the Fallout franchise, who haven't received a new main title since the release of Fallout 4 in 2015 or a spin-off game since the release of Fallout 76 in 2018.
