As the debate regarding what ARC Raiders' playstyle the community should adopt, the Embark CEO has an unequivocal stance: the game is built around strangers coming together and helping each other out, with the occasional shoot-out to create tension.
In an interview with Gamesbeat, Patrick Söderlund stated that the ethos of ARC Raiders has never been about shooting other players. However, you still can engage with it as a PvP extraction shooter. Instead, the ability to take down other players serves a different purpose, adding a layer of anxiety to each raider encounter.
Söderlund went on to explain that during development, ARC Raiders was being worked on as a pure PvE experience; however, it lacked a bit of urgency. By adding more players to a single server, they managed to keep raiders on their toes at all times.
To Söderlund, I can attest to what he says is true. My favorite aspect of ARC Raiders, and the reason it's got its hooks on me, is the uncertainty during raider encounters. I've had players backstab me, join me while taking down giant ARCs, I've saved some stranglers while my intrusive thoughts tried to take over, telling me to deliver the final blow so I could ruin someone's day. It's a fascinating gamified social experiment that I can't wait to see how it evolves.
