Marathon, Bungie's newest extraction shooter, launched only with trios in mind, as players can only start missions in groups of three. Although the game allows players to queue solo or in duos by simply disabling the auto-fill feature, they can still encounter full squads in their games.

However, game director Joe Ziegler has announced through his social media that a duos experimental queue will be added to the game for a limited time as part of a test.

The test will begin on Wednesday, March 18, at 10:00 AM PT (5:00 PM GMT) and will run for around two weeks. The director said that they could extend it if the response is positive, or end it before that if there is not much interest.

Here are other things to keep in mind about the test:

  • It will only be in the map Perimeter
  • Can only queue with a premade group. Solo players cannot participate as there is no traditional matchmaking for the experimental playlist.
  • Players will only be matched with other duos.
  • Expect some things to be "a bit jank."

To access the test, players will have to select the option "Perimeter - Duo" from the zone select screen. Ziegler explained that "this likely won't be the final implementation of how it would look and flow in the game, but for now it was easiest way for us to get it to you all to help us test."

The director also teased that this won't likely be the only experiment they run in the game, meaning we could see other squad formats in the future.

In the meantime, players have been busy the past few days, decoding cryptic messages to secure their entry to Cryo Archive, the upcoming fourth map that will feature endgame scenario activities.
