Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey is taking over cinemas all across the world. It’s an ambitious and modern take on Homer's classic poem, one that has certainly piqued the interest of many gaming fans of Greek mythology.
There is no shortage of games inspired by Greek mythology or set in ancient Greece. As someone who absolutely loves that time period, I’ve played my fair share of them. If Nolan’s epic has you yearning for more of that time period or a game featuring the myths and legends from said era, here are my top recommendations.
Games To Play After Watching The Odyssey
My top picks for games to try out if you want to enjoy some Greek mythology-adjacent games are the following:

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
I love seeing positive revisionism regarding AC Odyssey. Back when it launched, it was a very divisive title, as it pushed the franchise's more RPG elements, which slowly took over the original premise of stealth and parkour gameplay.
Odyssey in particular is great if you want an incredible immersive experience that lets you explore ancient Greece during the early years of the Peloponnesian War, a real-life conflict that spanned decades between the city of Athens and Sparta.
That said, the game drew criticism for incorporating fantastical elements, as several mythological creatures, such as Minotaurs and Cyclopes, can be fought. You can also explore the island of Ithaca and do a quest for Odessa, a descendant of Odysseus. There’s a whole mode that lets you explore the world as if you were on a guided tour.
Overall, it’s probably one of the best gaming experiences if you want to chase that Odyssey high.
Hades 2
My favorite game on this list, Hades 2, doesn’t take place in ancient Greece directly, but you’ll get to meet plenty of characters from the Odyssey.
While the first game is flawless and perfectly fine to play, I recommend the sequel for a few reasons, the most important being that it heavily features the likes of Odysseus, Polyphemus, Scylla, and more characters from Homer’s Odyssey. Homer himself is revealed to be the narrator of the story at one point.
There is a neat side quest you can complete, helping Odysseus come to terms with his troublesome past as well, making it the perfect companion piece. Not to mention the gameplay itself is highly addictive if you love roguelikes. I reviewed it last year, giving it a perfect 10/10.
Immortals Fenyx Rising
Another Ubisoft joint, one that, for many, should have had just as much success as Assassin’s Creed.
Immortals Fenyx Rising is the story of a young human who needs to defeat Typhon, a mythological threat that rivals even the Greek gods themselves, to save his brother. The story is fantastic, narrated from the perspective of Prometheus while telling it to Zeus.
You’ll run into various gods along the way, and even Odysseus himself, who has been corrupted by Typhon. It’s honestly a refreshing game that sadly didn’t have the success it deserved despite massive critical praise.
Age of Mythology
If you want to feel like Odysseus himself by becoming a grand master strategist, then Age of Mythology is right up your alley.
Developed by the iconic Ensemble Studios that created Age of Empires, Mythology draws a lot of inspiration from, well, mythology. There’s more than Greek mythos here, as you’ll also explore Norse, Egyptian, and a few more cultures. That being said, the game’s campaign is pretty cool, as you’ll get to experience a bit of the war against Troy, helping King Agamemnon defeat them with the Trojan Horse.
God of War Trilogy
Perhaps the least Odyssey-adjacent project in the entire list, but nonetheless a worthwhile experience.
There are over a dozen games in the franchise, but I recommend you stick to the three major titles of the original trilogy and then proceed to spin-offs if you get hooked. You’ll follow Kratos, a former Spartan soldier, who makes a deal with Ares to keep his men alive. Eventually, he gets fed up with being treated like a toy by the gods, swearing revenge on Olympus.
There are no references to Odysseus or the Odyssey in any of the games. But if you just want to vibe, hacking and slashing in a Greek setting, you can’t go wrong with a genre-defining series.
