5 Games That Needed to Have One or More Spin-Offs

These five games could have been responsible for making more amazing ones.

  • Primary Subject: Video Game Franchise Spin-Offs (Popular Games Lacking Genre Expansion)
  • Key Update: Key gaming franchises like Dispatch, The Last of Us, Devil May Cry, Hades, and Mass Effect harbor untapped narrative and genre potential that remains unfulfilled due to a lack of spin-off releases.

  • Quick Answer: Video game franchises often miss opportunities for spin-offs by sticking strictly to primary genres despite having rich lore and expansive character casts.

When video games become popular enough, or have extensive in-game lore and cast, they're usually given a spin-off. These are separate titles that use the existing content, but take a new direction in story, gameplay, or genre.

An example off the top of my head would be the Fire Emblem series. While its mainline games are known for their top-down tactical turn-based combat, it remained relevant enough to spawn a gacha and hack-and-slash spin-offs. Some are lucky enough to get one, but most never get any at all.

Then there are games that feel like they would benefit from receiving a spin-off, or at least make sense to have one or more, but for some reason, never did or have yet to. As someone who has been gaming for years, here are a few examples I believe fit that description the best.

1. Dispatch

This is one of the more recent entries in this list, given that it was released back in 2025, but I think it has already earned the right to a spin-off. When Dispatch came out, everyone praised it for its wonderful cast of characters and narrative-driven gameplay, and they were right to do so.

Given how popular it still is, it would have made sense for it to have a fighting game spin-off. It has enough unique superhero characters to warrant it, and it would have helped the Dispatch name spread even further. Unfortunately, that has yet to happen, but perhaps adHOC Studio will do it someday.

2. The Last of Us

It cannot be denied that The Last of Us is one of the most famous series to ever be created for the PlayStation. Its survival-horror gameplay has made its mark on every PlayStation fan, and while it has proved excellent in that genre, there is room for it to take on another and do just as well.

It would have been so good if it had a spin-off that involves managing quarantine zones, similar to what you'd find in real-time strategy games, and keeping everyone safe from the hordes of infected. If not that, then at least a game that provides a different perspective, like those from other countries who are also desperately trying to survive. There's a good amount of potential, but I think none of it will be used, given how deviating from the popular main formula could work against the series.

3. Devil May Cry

Devil May Cry has always been known as an action-adventure hack-and-slash series and is undoubtedly popular. Its main characters, Dante and Vergil, have even ventured outside to take part in crossovers, taking on genres such as fighting and tactical games to spread their names even further.

And yet, the main series has never deviated from what it does best, even though it has the resources to do so. There could have been games that focused on characters like Trish or Lady, giving us more insight into things happening outside of the main adventure. Such spin-offs would have been a lot of fun and perhaps even deepened the lore of the series, but given how they have yet to exist even after so long, we may never get such.

4. Hades

Both Hades and its sequel have been touted as some of the best indie games ever released. The two took the rougelike genre to the next level, providing people with countless hours of fun and making dying repeatedly one of the most fun and memorable experiences.

But while both games are great, there's wasted potential by not creating spin-offs. They already use the most interesting characters from Greek mythology, and they're all unique in personality and weaponry, so options weren't limited when creating a new and separate adventure.

5. Mass Effect

Personally, this is the perfect example of a series that definitely could have made great spin-offs, but never did for whatever reason. For those who have ever played Mass Effect, you'll know how insane it is when it comes to world-building, with so many unique places and characters, and all of them are interesting in their own right.

We could have gotten spin-offs that didn't focus on the human race and instead shifted attention to other popular species such as the Krogans, Salarians, Turians, and more. With the many weapons and locations, there could have been an awesome strategy game, or even a survival horror that takes fear to the next level. So many things could have been done but never were, and it's one of the most unfortunate things ever, given the scope of the Mass Effect universe.

Although it is rather unfortunate that these games don't have spin-offs, given that they could have given us some really good ones, perhaps there will come a time when they will. Such a future is certainly possible, and I'll be counting the days until it happens.
