It’s about time Team Cherry moves on from Hollow Knight, but not for the wrong reasons.
Team Cherry has already confirmed that they are working on the highly anticipated DLC for Hollow Knight: Silksong. It’s still early in development, so we might have to wait a few more months or years before we can get our hands on it. After all, what’s a few years compared to Silksong’s agonizing 7-year wait?
In a recent interview with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, creator Ari Gibson mentioned that apart from worrying about the futility of death, he is also looking forward to “...do a few more games.” He didn’t explicitly mention that he’s moving away from the Hollow Knight IP, but we could speculate that this might be their final Hollow Knight game after all these years.
And personally? I see that as a good thing.

Team Cherry has pigeonholed itself with its Metroidvania and soulslike genres, no thanks to the Hollow Knight series. Moving away from that limitation can give them new opportunities to create the next game that could break new ground.
Seven long years in development take a toll, and despite Team Cherry’s passion for creating unique stories, it has to come to an end. There’s a wide market of gamers dying to know what their next projects are, but as someone who thinks Silksong was the pinnacle of what they can achieve with the genre, I’m looking forward to seeing what else they are working on.
It doesn’t have to be another soulslike or a metroidvania that punishes players with brutal runbacks and poisonous swamps. Maybe it’s Team Cherry’s first venture into a true narrative-focused game. Despite Hollow Knight’s extensive lore, there hasn’t really been a straightforward attempt at telling its overall story. We’re all just picking up bits and pieces of scattered lore throughout Hallownest or Pharloom; sometimes, we would even check out YouTube lore experts to make sense of them all.
Their next game could focus on that missing ‘story’ element.

Another thing worth considering is that Team Cherry might move away from 2D altogether. We might see their next game as a 3D science-fiction adventure, or an episodic fantasy series similar to AdHoc’s Dispatch.
The possibilities are endless, but this is just me rambling about what could be their next big thing. Team Cherry has a talented pool of artists, and it’s only a matter of time before we play their next game. Who knows? Maybe it could reach the same level of success and pop-culture phenomenon as that of Silksong.
In the meantime, we can still look forward to the imminent Silksong DLC. Then we can brace ourselves for another decade-long wait for their next entry.
