Onimusha: Way of the Sword had fans worried when it was first revealed, as they thought they were going to play another big Soulslike. However, despite some similarities, this game won’t be a Soulslike or an open-world title, making many gamers breathe a sigh of relief. While fans of those genres would have liked to see it, Capcom breaking away from these trends is a good thing.
It’s also worth noting that Capcom hasn’t given in to recent industry trends, outside of remasters, sequels, and remakes. Okay, those are still major industry trends, but at least they didn’t try to force their premier samurai game to be a soulslike with open-world elements.
No matter their quality, fans can agree that there are just too many games going for Soulslike and open-world elements. Assassin’s Creed Shadows was a great open-world game, but fans sick of the genre would have hated it. Elden Ring combined both genres to critical acclaim, but similar imitators didn’t get the same love.
Despite what the initial teaser trailer showcased, Onimusha: Way of the Sword is doing its own thing.
Like the previous Onimusha games, Way of the Sword will have your character slashing through demons and collecting souls. Because this is a modern game, the graphics are spruced up, and combat looks even more fun than before. Knowing that this is going to play similarly to the older games, with QOL improvements, will be welcomed by many.
What makes this better is that it has a lot of Capcom’s signature staples that fans are going to love. The company previously confirmed that this wasn’t going to be a long game, so fans won’t spend hundreds of hours on their first playthrough. A shorter runtime also means plenty of replayability, something Capcom fans love from these games.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword isn’t the only Capcom title that’s sticking to its roots. Resident Evil Requiem mixing first and third-person cameras gives fans the best of both play styles. The potential return of Leon S. Kennedy also has fans excited, especially since he’s going to be older.
Just to be clear, soulslike games and open-world titles aren’t inherently bad. Their mechanics are a lot of fun to go through, and finding a pattern of getting through them can be fun. It’s just that we’ve had our fill of them, and overexposure to anything can be a bad thing.
Either way, we can’t wait to get our hands on Onimusha: Way of the Sword when it comes out next year. With this game and the Okami sequel, it’s clear that Capcom is really embracing its roots.
