Chrono Trigger is often held in a pedestal by many JRPG fans, and with good reason. The game’s fast pacing is still appreciated, and the battle system is still really fun. Even after all these years, this game holds up, and we’re glad it’s readily available on PC and mobile devices.

But why isn’t this legendary game available on more consoles? Since fans still hold this game in high regard, you would think it would be re-released for every console in every generation.

It still baffles us how Chrono Trigger doesn’t get more re-releases. There was talk about a remake recently, but that proved to be false. While a remake or remaster would be nice, re-releasing the regular base game is enough for most fans.

People give Capcom a lot of guff for re-releasing the original Resident Evil 4 whenever they can. But at least fans everywhere know how the game plays. It’s an important piece of gaming history, and we’re glad the re-releases keep coming.

Skyrim is another game that gets criticized for being re-released too much, but we still think that’s a good thing. Granted, only the PC version of this game will get substantial post-launch support with mods, but console fans can at least enjoy a lengthy RPG. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but the game is still pretty enjoyable.

What’s funny is that there was a time when Chrono Trigger was regularly re-released. It got a port on the PS1 with Final Fantasy 4 called Final Fantasy Chronicles, which added new anime cutscenes to the adventure. This version would also be available for download on PS3, PSP, and PS Vita through the PSN Network. It wasn’t a perfect port, with awkward slowdowns happening before battles and when leaving the pause menu.

Fans also enjoyed the DS port of this game, which added the PS1 version’s anime cutscenes, removed the long waits, and added new dungeons to the mix. This version was then ported to PC and mobile devices, with graphics options and other bonus features.

Unfortunately, this was the last port we ever saw for Chrono Trigger, and it would never be brought to other systems. Many fans thought that we would see the PC version ported to other consoles, but that hasn’t happened yet. It might not have a ton of QOL features, but fans would kill to have this port on the Switch.

Although the Chrono Trigger remake news has proven to be false, we hope it’s true to some extent. It would explain why Square Enix hasn’t re-released this game in such a long time. We appreciate that it’s on PC and mobile, but this game should also be on current-gen consoles.
