Fighting games are some of the most fun and nuanced experiences in video games. Aside from the endless debates over which character is good, bad, or cheap, there’s also growing discourse about which controller you should use. A quick read through of online forums will have you scratching your head and overthinking this decision, so I’m here to speed up the process. In this article, I want to walk you through my journey of finding the controller for me, weighing the pros and cons of each before settling on my personal favorite. So, fighters, it’s time to take up arms and choose your weapon.

Gamepad

Gamepads are probably the most popular choice for casuals because of how accessible they are. Everyone has a gamepad at home, and every gaming console out there has a gamepad bundled along with it. Chances are, you’ve played your first fighting game on a gamepad as well.

I’ve personally played through most of 280 hours of Tekken with a gamepad, and I’ve even used a gamepad during my many (failed) tournament runs. Aside from accessibility, there’s also the factor of familiarity. Everyone is somewhat familiar with how a gamepadworks, and some mechanics from video games can also translate to fighting game skills. Back is still back, forward is still forward, and the buttons are still in the same location.

After some time, traveling between fighting games like the wandering demon Akuma, I soon realized that gamepads weren’t the best fit for every video game. Ironically, this realization came through my first foray into Street Fighter, which is traditionally a 6-button fighting game.

For reference, most other fighting game controllers already have 6 buttons, while gamepads only have 4. There was also the issue of clunky motion inputs, because d-pads and analog sticks weren’t meant for quarter-circles and dp inputs. I still wear my calloused thumbs like a badge of honor from trying (miserably) to do wavedashes on a d-pad. It was here that I realized it was time to invest.

Arcade Stick

When you think of fighting games, you automatically think of arcade sticks. These controllers are practically synonymous with fighting games, acting as a symbol for fighting games all around. Arcade sticks have a storied history whenever you wield them, representing all the hardships of the classic arcade scene that all the greats had to go through.

Arcade sticks are an expensive investment that has tons of customizable options. You may hear opinions on Korean levers, gates, and different spring options, but I suggest getting a pre-made arcade stick and trying it for yourself. Arcade sticks are best for fluid motion inputs, easy muscle memory, and a bit of visceral feedback when you slam your stick during hype moments.

I was proud when I first purchased my Real Arcade Pro Hayabusa. You never really forget your first arcade stick, because in my case, it was also my last. The jump from pad to arcade sticks can be daunting for someone with little patience like me, and I began feeling frustrated at all my missed inputs.

The arcade stick provides a lot of benefits, such as easier maneuvering, quicker inputs, and the added visceral feedback of slamming your stick along its gates. By all intents and purposes, arcade sticks are a direct upgrade to the controller, but only if you put in the time and patience. Neither of which I had, so I went to the next (slightly controversial) best option.

Leverless

Taking the modern fighting game world by storm, some purists would say that the leverless controller is a disgrace, but I think it is the next step in fighting game evolution. As the name states, leverless controllers are arcade sticks that replace the iconic stick with buttons or a keyboard.

If playing with an arcade stick felt like driving a stick-shift car, leverless controllers are on automatic transmission. Each button has a defined direction, combining the clean inputs of controllers with the tactile feel of arcade sticks. It’s also worth mentioning that leverless controllers are easier on the wrists, meaning you won’t be pulverizing your wrist for that sweet Korean backdash input.

A Leverless Future

The only hindrance I feel when using leverless controllers is the smoothness of my inputs. Complex and repeating inputs, such as the Korean Backdash or wavedash in Tekken, are surprisingly harder on leverless controllers. I even remember specifically looking up piano dexterity drills on YouTube just so I could do complex inputs on my hitbox, whereas arcade stick players need only to flick their wrist to accomplish it. But personally, the positives of using a leverless controller far outweigh the negatives, which is why I’ve settled on this as my controller of choice.

Regardless of which fighting game controller you choose, I recommend you try all of them. When I first started my journey, I thought I was definitely going to fall in love with arcade sticks, but expectations can differ from reality. So instead of overthinking your next big investment, just know that you will never go wrong with any controller you pick.
