Tales of the Shire has been a hot topic amongst gamers, especially Lord of the Rings fans. While the game isn’t an acclaimed darling like many wanted, some are accepting it as a cozy experience and not much more than that. Cozy titles are always associated with handheld gaming, which is why its current Switch state is disappointing.
Luckily, the game actually performs decently on Steam Deck, which isn’t exactly a major surprise. Interestingly, this cozy sim still has some performance limitations on Valve’s handheld, but it performs better than Nintendo’s last-gen hybrid console. This writer also imagines the Switch 2 version will play that port better, but I digress.
YouTube content creator Deck Wizard has released a video showing how Tales of the Shire plays on Steam Deck. Based on the video, it looks like this is a fairly playable experience, albeit with some caveats. Deck Wizard experiments with the graphics settings, switching between low and very low, while also deciding if they should upscale with FSR or nothing at all.
In the comments, Deck Wizard says the game could use a performance boost, but does think this is a decent experience overall. Granted, it’s sad that the game has to run at low settings to be playable on Steam Deck, but maybe a patch or two will be able to fix this. The game is also stuck at low framerates, staying at around 30 or 40FPS, but this is a cozy title, so it’s not a huge problem.
Even with its mediocre presentation, Tales of the Shire: A The Lord of the Rings Game is still pretty popular and dominating various gaming conversations. It’s easily the most popular cozy game right now, at least until the next big thing happens. This goes to show how popular this franchise is, and we hope the next entry gives fans something more substantial.
