Bringing Dreadnought Assault back in Space Marine 2 might seem like a fan favorite, but reviving a mode that already failed before is risky and could go wrong without careful handling.
Datamines from the latest patches show signs Saber Interactive is planning to include the mode in PvP. If players recall Space Marine 1, the name definitely stands out, but not in a great way.
Why Did Players Abandon Dreadnought Assault So Quickly?
The concept had potential, but most players were frustrated by its flawed balance.
In its original form, Dreadnought Assault was a daring experiment that let a single team take control of a massive, high-powered Dreadnought unit to change multiplayer dynamics.
Whoever brought out the Dreadnought first often overwhelmed the opposing team without much trouble.
Only one random player got to pilot the Dreadnought, so most of the time, everyone else was just waiting and feeling left out. Mods couldn’t keep the game mode alive beyond a short novelty.
Is Dreadnought Assault Actually Coming Back?
The mode is being hinted at once more in Space Marine 2, with leaks showing possible Chaos Helbrutes and bigger team battles.
There’s speculation that Saber could finally do what Relic didn’t: allow both sides to deploy their own Dreadnoughts simultaneously.
A 1v1 showdown between towering machines could finally solve the imbalance that plagued the original.
Even so, there’s no guarantee the mode will succeed. I’m hyped to see Dreadnoughts in the new engine, but I have doubts Saber is bringing anything truly new.
The much-hyped Siege Mode fell short for some players because it felt too slow, limited, and repetitive.
How Can Saber Avoid Repeating the Same Mistakes?
If the Dreadnoughts aren’t responsive or satisfying to control, there’s no point in reviving the mode at all.
That’s why a simple reintroduction of the same mechanics from Space Marine 1 just won’t cut it. Even in current PvE content, AI-controlled units like the Dreadnought have a habit of standing still, missing targets or struggling to path correctly.
In intense PvP, that kind of behavior can ruin what should be an exciting mode. Should this mode make a comeback, it must be redesigned from the ground up with current design standards.
Both teams need ways to get involved with the Dreadnought rather than only watching it stomp around.
Giving players points to summon reinforcements mid-match could make it more engaging.
Players on foot might be able to chip away at the enemy Dreadnought or activate events that shift control. Either way, the match should stay dynamic, balanced, and fair for all players, not only the one in the big suit.
Can the New Additions Make the Mode Worth It?
Plus, leaks of weapons like the Grav Cannon and Power Axe suggest more content from Saber, which is exciting but also concerning.
The community is already skeptical about content being drip-fed or unfinished features being teased before they’re ready. If Dreadnought Assault is reintroduced without proper work, it could flop again and hurt the game’s reputation.
So, while the nostalgia around Dreadnought Assault might be strong for some, it’s worth remembering why the mode didn’t stick the first time.
Bringing it back without making it more balanced and smoother just feels like undoing what the game already improved.
