Soulslike Purists Might Hate It, but Lies of P’s New Difficulty Option Is a Win

Lies of P launched with a strong Soulslike identity that was punishing, atmospheric, and unapologetic.

With the Overture DLC announcement, Neowiz is changing the game by introducing difficulty options, which will likely divide opinions. This includes the base game, by the way.

The update adds three difficulty levels: the original, renamed "Legendary Stalker," plus two new modes—"Butterfly’s Guidance" (easy) and "Awakened Puppet" (intermediate).

According to director Jiwon Choi, this shift isn’t a compromise but a calculated move to open the doors to more players. Neowiz took community feedback seriously to expand the player base while keeping the core experience intact.

Of course, Soulslike purists have criticized the change, saying it dilutes what makes the genre special. But that criticism overlooks what this update really accomplishes. The difficulty remains, but there are now more ways to get involved.

Hardcore players still face intense, high-stakes battles, while others can explore Krat’s world without hitting a difficulty brick wall. If anything, it opens the door for players who might’ve otherwise skipped it entirely. The Overture DLC itself isn't just a bolt-on expansion either.

Expect 15–20 hours of extra content, including fresh weapons like the Talon Claws, Royal Bow, and Gunblade. Expect new locations and enemies, plus a zoo of mutated creatures acting as a grim prequel to the Puppet Frenzy.

A new boss rush mode called “Battle Memories” lets players replay old bosses or take on gauntlets of multiple foes back-to-back through a Death March mode. These additions cater directly to veterans craving more challenge.

One of the best things about this new format is how it keeps the experience as intended. Legendary Stalker is left as is for those who prefer the classic path.

You can go the easy route if you like, or challenge yourself with boss rushes and by dropping simpler mechanics altogether. This isn’t about coddling but giving options. This isn’t the first Soulslike to include easier difficulty options.

For example, Khazan added an easy mode and still stayed one of the hardest in the genre. To be fair, Lies of P stood out as more accessible than FromSoftware games thanks to its specter summons and flexible builds. All this does is make that accessibility official.

In the end, this update builds on what made Lies of P special without taking away from it. It provides choice without robbing the sense of achievement from those who want to earn it all. And if the genre wants to keep growing, this might be the right kind of evolution.
