The Big Dilemma: Should Nintendo Make a Sequel to Smash Bros. Ultimate on the Switch 2 or Update It?

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 Update

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the most popular games on the original Nintendo Switch, selling over 36 million copies. Given its success and how well-received it was, many fans are excited about the thought of the next entry that could be produced for the Switch 2. However, there is a particular concern that could drastically affect the fate of the series on the ninth-generation console.

Given what Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has done and how it can be seen as the entry that has everything fans could ever want, Nintendo may use that as the reason not to create a sequel to it. The company could decide to enhance the game on the Switch 2 instead, updating it so it becomes even more than what it already is. The possibility of such a thing happening begs the question: Should a new Super Smash Bros. game be introduced to the system, or is it better if Nintendo continues updating the most recent entry?

While many are certainly looking forward to a new entry in the series, it is likely better to go with the latter option. As stated before, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already feels like it has everything fans could ever need, and all Nintendo has to do is to expound on what it already has instead of making an entirely new game.

If the company were to make a sequel instead, there could be problems regarding it not meeting the standards people would expect from it. One of the things fans would be looking forward to in a new entry is its roster, and given that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already has such a diverse cast, it would be hard to top it.

Carrying all the characters over to the next entry will prove difficult, as it means Nintendo having to obtain the rights to add third-party characters yet again, which can be quite a hassle.

Porting over the game from the Nintendo Switch will prove much easier in terms of having and maintaining a large roster, and so will expanding on it, since all that needs to be done is form new agreements with companies who are willing to lend their IP.

Another issue about a sequel is that there isn't really anywhere else the series can go in terms of features and mechanics. Super Smash Bros.Ultimate can be seen as having the perfect balance among all the games in regards to its combat pace and techniques, as well as stages and mode variations.

A sequel will likely retain everything, but adding to what's already there will be quite a challenge without making the game feel more bloated. While it is still possible to have new or innovative ideas, it may be better and less costly to put them in an update for a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Switch 2 version rather than an entirely new entry in the series.

The fate of Smash Bros.' future on the Switch 2 is still unclear, as there's currently nothing that tells whether people will be getting a new game or a port of the most recent one. While the latter offer seems better for fans and Nintendo, that doesn't mean the former doesn't have its benefits and won't happen. Everyone will just have to wait and see where the series will go on the ninth-generation console, but hopefully, whatever direction it takes is one that can be looked forward to and appreciated.
