Revenge of the Savage Planet caught me by surprise. Based on the name, I thought it was going to be a straightforward sequel to Journey to the Savage Planet, which was a colorful first-person shooter.
The sequel seems to be doing something new entirely, as Revenge is now a third-person platformer with plenty of colorful weapons. This upcoming game has plenty of Ratchet & Clank vibes, and we’re pretty excited to see the final product. What’s going to lure people in is the co-op, allowing for some crazy multiplayer sessions.
From developer Raccoon Logic Studios, Revenge of the Savage Planet was one of the many unique titles shown off during the Future Games Show Spring Showcase on Steam. This game started turning heads by having really colorful visuals that make it stand out from other titles. The first game, Journey, also had vibrant graphics like this, but the third-person perspective helps.
Similar to Journey of the Savage Planet, Revenge has two characters stranded on, well, a savage planet filled with plants and creatures that want to kill you. With little gear provided by a dumb corporation, players have to survey the area, survive, and seemingly kill everything in sight.
Like the previous game, Revenge of the Savage Planet doesn’t bother with any of that pesky realism and goes for a pure video game experience. There are weapons that summon black holes, shoot Nickelodeon-like slime that kills, and good old laser blasts for that Ratchet & Clank feeling. It all looks great too and should make for a really fun experience, assuming that the game’s development goes well.
Weapons aren’t the only video game-y traits we appreciate, as there’s also a decent amount of platforming and rail grinding. Various movement options always make video games better, so seeing all these jumps and grinds at your disposal should make platformer fans very happy. It’s clear that this game is trying to capture that PS2-era platformer style and the devs are nailing that feeling.
Now that PlayStation has seemingly put Ratchet & Clank on the backburner after Rift Apart didn’t do too well in sales, this might be the closest thing gamers have to replicating that experience. Like Revenge of the Savage Planet, Ratchet & Clank is one of those pure video game experiences fans miss, with great platforming and a ton of shooting. We don't have enough big 3D platformers outside of Astro Bot, so this could be something special.
Revenge of the Savage Planet is currently planned for a May 8, 2025 release on Steam. The devs have also mentioned interest in bringing the game to Switch 2, so let’s hope that happens.
