It’s been almost two years since Final Fantasy VII Rebirth graced us with its presence in 2024. The sequel built on the success of Remake, twisting the familiar story we loved from Cloud and his friends and turning it into a deeply confusing reimagining of one of gaming’s most acclaimed titles.
I’ve had my fair share of great memories with Rebirth. Things such as playing silly minigames with the gang, going on beach trips with Tifa and Aerith, and facing off against Sephiroth for the hundredth time. I loved every second of the main story, and I can’t wait for the imminent third entry. Except for one thing: Chadley.

Chadley is the bane of my existence in the Final Fantasy VII Remake project. His constant presence has made me question the meaning of life and even wonder why we need to fight Sephiroth when this little robot kid exists.
He serves as your VR Training guide, and through him, you take on the game’s most challenging combat missions. To achieve full completion and earn the Platinum Trophy, you need to clear all of his VR challenges. This includes fights like battling Ifrit and Alexander together, or dealing with five of the most frustrating enemy types in one arena. This is where the true endgame of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth lies, and it’s one of the hardest challenges I’ve ever played in a Final Fantasy game, even more frustrating than having to dodge 200 lightning strikes in Final Fantasy X.

Chadley is the only reason I haven’t gone for 100% completion. I’ve already finished all the minigames with top scores, including Queen’s Blood and the rage-inducing sit-ups minigame with Tifa. What’s left are those maddening hero challenges against the game’s toughest monsters. Even my poor Aerith couldn’t keep up with those cruelly designed battles.
It feels less like a test for Cloud and his companions and more like a torture chamber for players desperate for that Platinum Trophy. Chadley’s VR missions are harder than Sephiroth’s final fight. Even the VR challenges in Crisis Core feel like a cakewalk compared to his twisted experiments.

I honestly don’t know what Square Enix was thinking when they designed these. In an interview with the UK’s Daily Star, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth director Naoki Hamaguchi acknowledged the issue, apologizing to fans and confirming that the third game won’t feature any challenging trophies.
That’s a brilliant decision, and it makes me even more excited for the final entry in the Remake project. Still, I hope Square Enix eventually tweaks the difficulty of Chadley’s VR challenges in Rebirth through future updates.
At the end of the day, it’s not the end of the world if I don’t 100% a game. It’s just not healthy.
