It’s only been a week since Wuchang: Fallen Feathers launched, and plenty of players are already venting on the game’s subreddit about one major roadblock, the first true boss: Commander Honglan.

According to Steam’s achievement data, only 40% of players have reached and beaten Commander Honglan, while the rest are still stuck trying to get past this punishing encounter. The completion rate drops even further with each subsequent boss fight, as the game steadily ramps up in difficulty.

As a result, new soulslike players are scrambling for help on subreddits and gaming groups, asking how to deal with her brutally fast moveset and the tight margins for error.

Commander Honglan is the game’s first major skill check, a clear sign that Wuchang: Fallen Feathers must be approached with the same mindset as Dark Souls. She hits hard, and her mix of magic and swordplay is no joke. Go in too aggressively, and she’ll stunlock you with a foot slam. Stay too far, and her ranged sword waves and throwing daggers will break your rhythm.

Worse still, in her second phase, she becomes even faster, channeling water-based attacks. One of her moves is as deadly as Malenia’s infamous “Waterfowl Dance,” though it can be countered if you time your dodges just right.

Strategies like memorizing her moveset, upgrading weapons, and equipping the right loadout become essential. Without proper preparation, players can easily get stuck in this fight for hours. Those who’ve beaten her often recommend using the Longsword, which allows players to parry her regular sword attacks and open her up for a counterattack.

It’s especially punishing for players new to the genre. Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is not exactly beginner-friendly, with plenty of difficulty spikes that can frustrate even the most determined newcomers. But for those willing to push through the challenge, Commander Honglan is the first real test of skill, patience, and perseverance.

Call it a skill issue, but Commander Honglan is easily one of the toughest boss fights in the game and has already become a fan favorite in the Wuchang community.

To those who’ve managed to defeat her, congratulations. And for those still stuck, you're in for a rough time. Good luck. If only you knew what’s waiting for you next!
